TONE

The TONE of a work is the authors attitude toward his subject or audience. It is made up by the authors careful choice and placement of words. The tone is meant to make the reader feel a certain way.

Examples include playful, serious, formal etc.

TONE
An aphorism is a general truth or observation about life. Often witty and wise Example: A mans fortunes are the fruit of his character To be great is to be misunderstood

TONE

Allusion- a reference in writing to a well known person, place, work of art/literature, or event in history.
Example: Ishmael Beah discussing Shakespeares work in A Long Way Gone

TONE

Cultural/Historical Relevance: In literature, the time, place, or culture the work is set will influence its meaning. The reader should study it before analyzing. Examples: Ishmael Beahs cultural relevance was his experience in Africa as a childsolider. The Odyssey was influenced by Ancient Greece.

TONE

Irony: When the opposite of what is expected occurs. Can be verbal (with words), or situational (with events), or dramatic (when the audience knows what the character does not)

Paraphrase

Paraphrase: To put something in your own words. In poetry, paraphrasing occurs in the second reading where you translate a poem line by line.

Denotation

Denotation: The actual dictionary meaning of a word or sentence.

Connotation

The figurative meaning of a word, sentence, or prose. In poetry, the connotation is analyzed in the 3rd reading and includes poetry elements such as sound devices and figurative language.

Shift

In poetry, when the poet suddenly changes his or her attitude/tone.

Dark Romanticism

A movement during the 19th century that focused on emotion (heart) over logic (head)...in literature, dark romantics believe man is evil and cannot overcome it, and believe nature is beautiful...but can destroy man.

Transcendental ism
Movement during the 19th century brough about because of industrialism. The opposite of dark romanticism, believed that man was essentially good, and could overcome evil. Believed that to get closer to God, you must be close to nature.

Imagery

Word choice that describes the five senses.

Diction

Word choice of the author. These create the tone of the written work.

Lyrical Poem

A free form poem that conveys emotion.
