Technology: Fashion Textiles Option

What is the course about?


Fashion Textiles GCSE will allow you to exercise your creativity by giving you a chance to design and make garments, accessories and furnishings. If you wish to pursue a career in fashion, it will provide a good foundation course for a job in the fashion industry or help to secure a place on a fashion course at college. Additionally, you will learn skills that will be useful in later life when you are creating your own home and skills that will serve as a leisure interest.

What topics will I study?


Design and market influences. Practical skills. Fibres and fabrics; tools and equipment. Finishing processes. Components. Modern technological developments and their impact on the design and making of textile products. > Computer technology; different manufacturing technique. > Textiles and the environment. > Quality control and assurance. > > > > > >

What kinds of class activities will there be?


Developing ideas for design and make tasks, set on a variety of themes: eg fashion; accessories; soft furnishings; undertaking practical investigations like finding out about existing products.

What kind of homework assignments will there be?


Research; obtaining fabric and materials required for practical work; design work; preparation for practical work; written work from textbooks and worksheets.

What percentage of the final GCSE grade is for coursework?


60% coursework. Candidates will complete a single project that should occupy approximately 45 hours under controlled conditions.

What percentage of the final grade is for examinations at the end of year 11?
40% one written theory examination. There is only one tier of entry.

What are the most interesting parts of the GCSE course?


This course includes a large element of practical work. Candidates will have a wide choice of items to design and make, aided by information technology equipment and software.
