ished fifth and sixth, respectively, at last
year’s state meet behind Coolidge.
EC head coach Chuck Lynch tough-
ened up EC’s schedule to better prepare
for this year’s state run. He replaced the
Teaysville Valley, Bettsville and Worthing-
ton meets and has the team running the
Boardman Spartan Invitational, the Wad-
sworth Grizzly Invitational and the
Garaway Invitational — all of which have
tougher competition. They will also be go-
ing for their third consecutive North Coast
League title.
“We’ve been running a lot of Division I
races just to make sure that we are really
running against the best competition we
can out there,” said EC coach Chuck
Lynch, who is in his 23rd year as head
coach. “If you’re running against good
people all the time, it makes you better. It
wouldn’t do us any good to go into a weak
race and have Marty out front running by
himself every week. If we go in a stronger
field, it gives him a chance to be pushed
and all the guys are running with quality
runners every week. We hope it makes us
better.”
Other top Panthers runners this season
have been senior Bryce Steindl, juniors
Matt Wiehe, Ryan Lynch, P.J. Foreman,
Brian Koziel, along with sophomore Con-
ner Budi and freshman Greg Nagy.
“We’re going to make it to state I’m
pretty sure, as long as everyone stays
healthy,” Steindl said. “We’re working
toward being in the best shape possible.
This is the best shape I’ve been in. My
goals this year is to get in the top 25 in
the state and win a state championship.

High expectations and state rankings
don’t seem to faze Steindl or his Panther
running mates.
“It’s nice being up there,” Steindl said.
“We finished ninth in the region my fresh-
man year and after last year, we went to
ninth in the state — that’s pretty cool!”
We’re definitely better. I think last year
everybody saw our potential. We only lost
one runner so we knew coming into the
season that we could be really good. We
knew we could be one of the top teams in
the state — and that team that everybody
is shooting for.”
