Greeting friends & fellow riders We hope that you all are doing well & getting those bikes tuned up & worked on as we get closer & closer to springtime. We have already had two significant snowfalls in our region over the past month so I think we have had our fill of winterwere ready to bring on the spring. If youve been reading Thunder Roads for a while, you should know that we support our troops, we promote patriotism and support organizations who help our riding communities. We are doing something this month that we have never done before & are reaching out to not only the motorcycle community but also the general public with the front cover & the inside back cover. I have been asked for our magazine to help reach the public on behalf of a special soldier named SGT Bowe Bergdahl. He isnt sleeping in a nice comfy bed tonight. He isnt eating at Taco Bell with his friends laughing about what happened at work today. He is being held as a prisoner of war over in Afghanistan right this very moment. God only knows what he is going through and has gone through since he was captured back in 2009. We as motorcyclists help people in need all throughout the year. We are called upon so many times to help many different types of people, situations and causes. As owner and editor of this magazine and also a U.S. Navy Veteran, I have been asked to help get the word out about SGT Bowe Bergdahl. Most people have no idea that there is a U.S. Soldier being held captive in Afghanistan and are shocked to learn of this situation. They relate the term POW to wars of the past, not the present. I and am asking you to please pass this along to as many people as you possibly can to contact Washington, sign the petition, make the call, support the websites and facebooks. We encourage everyone to visit the websites, share this info on your facebook pages and any other social media that you may be linked to. We are beginning to contact various groups & organizations that could help coordinate rides and fundraisers to raise money to purchase billboard ads, newspaper and magazine space, radio announcements, banners for major sporting events etc (Thunder Roads has and always will, donate any space that is used to print information about SGT Bowe Bergdahl). Washington will not do anything unless the voices are loud enough. Would you help if this was YOUR son, brother, uncle, or other family member??? Please do whatever you can to help spread the word.every little bit counts. June 2014 will mark five years since Bowe Bergdahl was captured by the Taliban. Our military men and women in uniform must know that if they are captured by the enemy, our nation will not rest until they are rescued. Here are 2 supporting sites please visit often for updates and ways that you can help: www.supportbowe.org www.BringHomeBowe.com We are almost through winter so try to stay warm and think spring, with the wonderful sounds of motorcycles in the air. We hope that all of your days are filled with love, peace & happiness. Thanks for being here with us. Until we meet again..Happy Trails!

PRESIDENTS DAY
February 17, 2014

Presidents Day, officially Washingtons Birthday, in the United States, holiday (third Monday in February) popularly recognized as honoring George Washington and Abraham Lincoln. The day is sometimes understood as a celebration of the birthdays and lives of all U.S. presidents. The origin of Presidents Day lies in the 1880s, when the birthday of Washingtoncommander of the Continental Army during the American Revolution and the first president of the United Stateswas first celebrated as a federal holiday. In 1968 Congress passed the Uniform Monday Holiday Bill, which moved a number of federal holidays to Mondays. The change was designed to schedule certain holidays so that workers had a number of long weekends throughout the year, but it has been opposed by those who believe that those holidays should be celebrated on the dates they actually commemorate. During debate on the bill, it was proposed that Washingtons Birthday be renamed Presidents Day to honor the birthdays of both Washington (February 22) and Lincoln (February 12); although Lincolns birthday was celebrated in many states, it was never an official federal holiday. Following much discussion, Congress rejected the name change. After the bill went into effect in 1971, however, Presidents Day became the commonly accepted name, due in part to retailers use of that name to promote sales and the holidays proximity to Lincolns birthday. Presidents Day is usually marked by public ceremonies in Washington, D.C., and throughout the country.

Xtreme International Ice Racing

Photos by Jim Harvey and Ben Lemons Article by Dennis Martin, TRM Missouri Xtreme International Ice Racing (XiiR) was formed in 2004 by Anthony The British Bulldog Barlow and his wife Marlene Barlow. These two along with their staff and the numerous racers, prove to the crowds that they have what it takes to put on a great competition each year. All of their hard work is apparent when you see an event like this, accomplished without any problems. This year, the start of the XiiR series was at St. Charles Family Arena. The crowd was the largest I can remember since we started covering the series back in 2006. I must say that the fans certainly enjoy a good race, especially on ice with a 180 lb. bike, with 190 horsepower! Many were wondering why the races got started about 20 minutes late, well I found out that there was a huge line of people coming through the main gate. I guess they didnt know about the second entrance on the side of the building. Well now they do Getting 7,500 people through the door takes time and I hope everyone that was there can understand that. After the opening ceremony, the racing was on and the racers got right down to business. In the pit area, the racers are friends, but on the ice they are on their own. This is where the Chills, Thrills, and Spills come in to play. In addition to the speedway, quad and flat track classes, this year the Pit Bike class was added. With four classes of races, this was certainly a full night of racing. The race results were: Speedway Class - 1st Barlow, 2nd Venegas, 3rd Lego; Quad Class - 1st P. Smith, 2nd Mann, 3rd Quam; Flat track Class - 1st Pearson, 2nd A. Smith, 3rd Carter; Pit Bike Class 1st A. Smith. The continued sponsorship from TNT Action Sports, AB Fencing & Landscaping, HP Powdercoating, Docs Harley-Davidson, Donelson Cycles, Supertrapp, Redline, is much appreciated by the XiiR. This support allows for the growth of the sport. Be sure to check out their website www.xiir.com for up-to-date news and the racing schedule. If you would like to be a racer on the ice, the contact information is on their website. See you next year!

Motorcycle Art

Here is something you dont see every day, a motorcycle made out of beer bottle caps. Pamela Smith of Desoto, Missouri has been creating this artwork for the past 2 1/2 years out of something we discard so quickly. The inspiration came from beer can art. I found out she has quite a stockpile of different caps to choose from. She has over 800 in stock. Many are unused directly from the beer companies. If she doesnt have the one you want, no problem. Simply go out, buy a 12 pack, drink it, and send her the caps with your payment. Its just that easy The motorcycles are $15 each or 2 for $20 and $4 shipping. If you want to use PayPal, send Pamela an email at beercapmotorcycles@aol.com for all the details. Typically the orders are filled and shipped on the same day. The holidays get busy, so get your Christmas orders in before Dec 12. Obviously she makes custom bikes. There is a whole different procedure with that, so be sure to get in contact with her to discuss the details. Custom designed caps can take up to 14 days since each cap is printed individually. Pamela can be reached at (636) 544-7438. For more information go to www.facebook.com/Bottlecapmotorcycles

ROAD CRASHES #1 KILLER OF AMERICANS ABROAD Road crashes have been named the leading cause of unnatural death among Americans who travel outside of the country, where they are unfamiliar with local driving rules and customs, and more U.S. citizens die in car or motorcycle accidents than from terrorist events according to a new study from Johns Hopkins University. Using data from the U.S. State Department that represented 5,417 unnatural deaths between January 2003 and December 2009, the research team calculated the rates of death by dividing the number of unnatural deaths by the number of Americans who visited each country. We know that the distribution of road traffic fatalities varies dramatically across different parts of the world, Huseyin Naci, from the London School of Economics and Political Science, told Reuters news service. While pedestrian deaths are more common in many parts of Africa, motorcycle and bicycle deaths occur more frequently in southeast Asia. Out of all the countries deemed unsafe for travel, Thailand ranked first among the most traffic-related deaths with 16.5 deaths per one million visits. Vietnam came in second with 15 deaths per one million visits, Morocco third with 12 deaths per one million visits, and South Africa fourth with 11 deaths per one million visits. Researchers also reported that scooter and motorcycle deaths accounted for a large portion of traffic-related deaths. MANDATORY HI-VIS REFLECTIVE CLOTHING LEGISLATED Effective January 1, 2014, it is mandatory for all motorcyclists and passengers to wear reflective jackets or vests when riding in the Republic of Mauritius, an island country in the south west Indian Ocean off the coast of Africa. Road Traffic Regulations passed last fall regarding Use of High Visibility Clothing states; No person shall drive (or ride as a pillion rider on) a motorcycle or auto cycle, unless he wears high visibility clothing without any covering being worn over it that may cause obstruction to its visibility. The regulations even dictate the type of polyester material, size of reflective strips and specific fluorescent colors (lime yellow, red or orange) intended to provide conspicuity at all times. Any person who contravenes these regulations shall commit an offence and shall, on conviction, be liable to a fine not exceeding 1,000 Mauritian Rupees (MUR). BAN ON MOTORBIKES IMPOSED IN SCOTTISH WOODLANDS Scottish Police say that members of the pubic visiting Balkello Woods have been left frustrated and concerned by the irresponsible and illegal use of motorcycles in the area, both on and off road. Police Scotland and the Forestry Commission have joined forces in announcing a major crackdown on unauthorized motor vehicles in the woodlands; Powers granted under Road Traffic and Anti-Social Behaviour legislation allow the police to seize vehicles including motorcycles and mini-motos where they have been driven without license or insurance, or, in this scenario, where they are used in an anti-social manner. A force spokesman said: Officers have long focused on reducing the anti-social and illegal use of motorcycles and make full use of Anti-Social and Road Traffic legislation to seize motorcycles that are being used illegally. Following enforcement, many of the vehicles seized are ultimately dismantled and crushed. DUCK AND COVER Like em or love em, the rift over the redneck Robertson clan from A&E Networks top-rated Duck Dynasty showed that America still has a backbone, and Americans can influence change if enough of us stand together. After the network suspended Phil Robertson over anti-gay comments, a grassroots tsunami of people from all walks of lifelit upphone lines, email inboxes and fax machines asthe surge of incoming communications quickly became so intense, employees of the cable giant reportedly complained that the company was overwhelmed and had all but ground to a halt. The uproar continued through Christmas until Friday, December 27, when A&E announced it was lifting the suspension and the show will continue. Millions of citizens -- many who had never taken any kind of action before had successfully sprang to the defense of a man and his right to speak freely, irrespective of PC. If the Duck Dynasty flap proves anything, its that -- when pushed too far -- concerned Americans will rise up in response! Photos by Shooters Images, Inc. The word customized has different meanings when you talk to a group of riders, Im sure you know what I mean. There are many different levels of customizing a motorcycle and this is one example of making the right choices. While JD Jolliffs boy was becoming a man in the Marine Corps, JD diverted some of his attention to creating what you see today. JD and T2G Customs worked together and gave his 2003 Road King a whole new custom look, but looks wasnt the only change. The stock 88 cu.in. motor was upgraded to 95 cu.in. and the exhaust is now a true dual system. To change the overall appearance, the fenders, saddle bags, tank dash, seat, tail light, handlebars, hand controls, and foot controls, were all replaced. It is important to point out that all these new parts, even though from different manufactures, do have a consistent theme. This is really what makes the overall look come together. JD kept the stock wheels, which in my opinion, is a good choice when customizing a bagger. Only about 10% of the rear wheel usually gets seen, unless you are at ground level. This will divert some of your budget to other areas. JD kept the stock tank with the exception of being stretched and blended to meet the seat and side panels. This was done by Darrel Hungate of T2G Customs and certainly completes the side view. Once all this was in place, it was time to turn it over to Shawn Johnston for a shot of pearl white paint. Skulls were blended into the new lines that Shawn created, and certainly makes a statement. JD rides in the Illinois area near St. Louis and Im sure if you havent seen him on the road, you will soon. Dont be surprised when you see his Road King entered in numerous Bike Shows in the area. It is certainly worthy of many trophies to come

Is Your Ability to See God Blinded? Lift up your eyes on high, and see who has created these things . . . Isaiah 40:26 The people of God in Isaiahs time had blinded their minds ability to see God by looking on the face of idols. But Isaiah made them look up at the heavens; that is, he made them begin to use their power to think and to visualize correctly. If we are children of God, we have a tremendous treasure in nature and will realize that it is holy and sacred. We will see God reaching out to us in every wind that blows, every sunrise and sunset, every cloud in the sky, every flower that blooms, and every leaf that fades, if we will only begin to use our blinded thinking to visualize it. The real test of spiritual focus is being able to bring your mind and thoughts under control. Is your mind focused on the face of an idol? Is the idol yourself? Is it your work? Is it your idea of what a servant should be, or maybe your experience of salvation and sanctification? If so, then your ability to see God is blinded. You will be powerless when faced with difficulties and will be forced to endure in darkness. If your power to see has been blinded, dont look back on your own experiences, but look to God. It is God you need. Go beyond yourself and away from the faces of your idols and away from everything else that has been blinding your thinking. Wake up and accept the ridicule that Isaiah gave to his people, and deliberately turn your thoughts and your eyes to God.

One of the reasons for our sense of futility in prayer is that we have lost our power to visualize. We can no longer even imagine putting ourselves deliberately before God. It is actually more important to be broken bread and poured-out wine in the area of intercession than in our personal contact with others. The power of visualization is what God gives a saint so that he can go beyond himself and be firmly placed into relationships he never before experienced.

A dog lover, whose dog was a female and in heat agreed to look after her neighbors male dog while the neighbors were on vacation. She had a large house and believed that she could keep the two dogs apart. However, as she was drifting off to sleep she heard awful howling and moaning sounds, rushed downstairs and found the dogs locked together, in obvious pain and unable to disengage, as so frequently happens when dogs mate. Unable to separate them, and perplexed as to what to do next, although it was late, she called the Vet, who answered in a very grumpy voice. Having explained the problem to him, the Vet said, Hang up the phone and place it down alongside the dogs. I will then call you back and the noise of the phone ringing will make the male lose his erection and he will be able to withdraw. Do you actually think that will work? she asked. Just worked on me, the Vet replied, & hung up. Lucille decided to give herself a big treat for her 70th birthday by staying overnight in a really nice hotel.. When she checked out the next morning, the desk clerk handed her a bill for $250.00. She demanded to know why the charge was so high I agree its a nice hotel, but the rooms arent worth $250..00 for just an overnight stay - I didnt even have breakfast! The clerk told her that $250.00 is the standard rate, and breakfast had been included had she wanted it. She insisted on speaking to the Manager. The Manager appeared and, forewarned by the desk clerk, announced: This hotel has an Olympic-sized pool and a huge conference center which are available for use. But I didnt use them. Well, they are here, and you could have. He went on to explain that she could also have seen one of the in-hotel shows for which they were so famous. We have the best entertainers from the world over performing here. But I didnt go to any of those shows.. Well, we have them, and you could have. No matter what amenity the Manager mentioned, she replied, But I didnt use it! and the Manager countered with his standard response. After several minutes discussion, and with the Manager still unmoved, she decided to pay, wrote a check and gave it to him. The Manager was surprised when he looked at the check. But Madam, this check is for only $50.00 Thats correct I charged you $200.00 for sleeping with me. But I didnt! Well, too bad, I was here, and you could have.

German WWII airplane motorcycle sidecar will give your grandpa a heart attack
So you missed out on being a member of the greatest generation. You never got to partake in a good war. But that doesnt mean you cant drive around on a motorcycle with a sidecar built to look like a WWII fighter plane, you hero. Wait a minute, its modeled after a German WWII fighter plane? Well, Im not quite sure how to feel about that one. But I guess as long as you use it for good and not evil it could be seen as a big middle finger to the folks who used the real things back during the war. Or something like that. Winter Squash Improves Lung Health Researchers have found that a vitamin A deficiency, caused by a carcinogen in cigarette smoke, can contribute or lead to the debilitating disease of emphysema. Winter squash, as well as sweet potatoes, contain high levels of vitamin A that may help protect against emphysema. Also, there is a correlation between eating foods high in the carotenoid beta-cryptoxanthin, and decreased incidence of lung cancer. These findings may explain why some smokers dont get lung cancer while others suffer from lung problems and die of cancer. While quitting smoking is ideal, a diet rich in vitamin A and beta-cryptoxanthin may protect lung health if a person unable to quit or is still exposed to cigarette smoke. Folate in Winter Squash Protects Against Birth Defects Winter squash contains folate, which has been shown to reduce the incidence of neural tube defects and other birth defects when taken by women before and during pregnancy. A cup of winter squash contains 15 percent of the recommended daily allowance of folate. Folate also works to prevent heart attacks by working against elements that break down blood vessel structures in your body. There is also a correlation between folate intake and reduced incidences of colon cancer. Summer Squash Promotes Cardiovascular Health Nutrients in summer squash, including vitamins A and C, manganese and magnesium, work together in your body

The history of the African American biker scene is filled with visionaries, artists, leaders and revolutionaries. People like William B. Johnson, the first African American Harley dealer. The teen-aged gypsy rider, Bessie Stringfield. P. Wee, the influential motorcycle club leader. And Benny Hardy, the unknown custom builder who created the most-famous motorcycle in the world, Captain America, for the movie Easy Rider. They each rode a motorcycle to showcase their pride, and fueled a movement more powerful than simple internal combustion. The real revolution started in the late 1940s, as black infantrymen streamed home from World War II, hungry to replace the adrenaline rush of combat. Post-war, surplus bikes were available and cheap. In this era of segregated America, some dealers wouldnt sell a new bike to an African American. Factions began to form out of love of the motorcycle. Some rode choppers, some rode dressers. The next step was the motorcycle club, some all-black, others integrated. They started to form in the late 1950s. East Bay Dragons. Star Riders. Buffalo Riders. The Eagles. The Defiant Ones. The Magnificent Seven. The Chosen Few. In his 2004 memoir Soul on Bikes: The East Bay Dragons MC and the Black Biker Set, Dragons founder and president Tobie Gene Levingston explains that, The level of camaraderie that young black men found in motorcycle clubs was something that couldnt be obtained around the house; blowing off steam and being able to relate to like-minded individuals with the same struggles, experiences, upbringing and ideals - what it meant to be black. However violent or anti-establishment some clubs were, they recognized that in order to get respect and be successful they need to stay positive and push their brothers to do good - within both the club and the community. The most basic but essential element has always been the ride, and a Harley has always been at the top of the food chain. Chopped fenders, raked forks and a souped-up motor made you a man among men. Show up on the wrong ride, and you werent taken seriously.
THUNDER ROADS MAGAZINE 36

You either got with it or got out. In Soul on Bikes, Levingston lays it out when speaking with a prospective member: Man, you cant get into the club with this Jap shit. You need to get yourself a Harley-Davidson. When you get one, come back and see us. The movement keeps rolling. Rare Breed Motorcycle Club was founded in 1989 to create a positive organization for African American men who share a passion for building and riding Harley-Davidson motorcycles. Our whole thing about forming Rare Breed is to be different from any other motorcycle club out there, says co-founding member KW. And we let the other young black men know there are other things to life than being in the neighborhood and the drug scene, the streets and the violence. This group has since grown into a brotherhood of men from all walks of life, Freedom is the universal truth shared by all riders: the freedom of riding without limits, barriers, rules or agendas. A rider never takes freedom for granted. Best freedom I ever had was on my bike, man, says P. Wee, a member since 1959 of the LA Defiant Ones MC, and one of the godfathers of the urban biker scene. By the time I put it into fourth gear, I feel like I can take on the world.

TRUE LOVE IN MOTION: My guess is 1 of 2 things is taking place here. (1) He needed an electric scooter and they were out so she is pushing him in that cart. Thats awesome, true love. What is Your Bike Worth? Probably Less Than You Think

We as motorcyclists are a different breed. For most of us our motorcycles are more than a mode of transportation. They are more like treasured art which we have over time modified and created to make unique to us. When someone damages or destroys the precious object in an accident, to us, they have damaged or destroyed a priceless artifact, not just damaged a motor vehicle. However, to the insurance companies, our motorcycles are merely motor vehicles which carry a fair market value just as any other motor vehicle does. Unless you have protected your bike, if it is totaled in an accident, all you will receive is fair market value, regardless of how much you owe on it or how much you think it is worth. Fair market value is the amount that the motorcycle would sell for on the open market. Not to be confused with what you would ask for if you were to sell it. The insurance companies will look to the NADA many times to gauge the value of a motorcycle. They will also look at what similar motorcycles are selling for in your geographic area. I often get complaints that the insurance company is not taking into consideration items such as chrome or exhaust in computing a value. Keep in mind that fair market value is not computed by adding up all that you have invested in the motorcycle. If you add $2,000 worth of chrome to your bike that does not necessarily mean the bike is worth $2,000 more than before you added it. The question is, can I as a buyer go out and purchase another bike like it for less. The answer is often yes. You can go on Cycle Trader or eBay and find a plethora of motorcycles chromed to the hilt being sold for much less than you would sell it for. In fact, Jim Cannon, who is with our firm, tracks what motorcycles are selling for on sites such as EBay in order to be able to better articulate to an insurance company why a motorcycle is worth more than they are offering. That is why I tell clients that if they want to put chrome on their motorcycle, do it because you like the chrome, not because you want to add value to your bike. I also advise that they save their receipts. While you cant always get the full value of what you invested, you can sometimes get more by documenting what you have invested, depending on what was added and when it was added. So what can you do to protect your bike? Other than what I advised above, you can purchase gap insurance. Now do not be confused. Gap insurance does not mean that you get replacement value for your motorcycle. What gap insurance does is pay the difference of what the motorcycle is worth, and what you owe. It keeps you from being upside down in your loan. By way of example, lets say you buy a bike for $15,000. One year down the road you owe $13,500 but the fair market value is now $11,000. You are in an accident and your bike is totaled. The insurance company is going to pay you $11,000. That means that you will still owe $2,500 on a motorcycle that you do not have any more. Trust me; those are painful payments to make. However, if you bought gap insurance, that would make up that $2,500 difference so that you would not find yourself owing further on the bike. You can also insure your motorcycle for a certain amount, often called scheduled value. What that means is that if your bike is totaled, the insurance company will pay that pre-set amount. Take that $15,000 bike that you bought in the previous scenario. You schedule the bike at $15,000. The same year goes down the road and it is worth $11,000. If you are in an accident and the bike can be fixed, then the insurance company will pay to have it fixed (they have to put in the same condition it was before the accident). However, if it is totaled, they will pay you $15,000. The bottom line is that the vast majority of us are riding with what is called an actual cash value policy (ACV). If our motorcycle is totaled, we will get the actual cash value of that motorcycle. If you, as many of us do, see your motorcycle as something that you have a personal investment in and you want to protect that investment, then you need to make sure that you purchase more than an ACV policy. Otherwise, your investment is at mercy of free market; and the free market will almost always determine that your motorcycle is worth less than you think it is. This month we are talking about gasoline, fuel, petrol, liquid hydrocarbons, or whatever you call the reduced. This means that the bike tends to actually accelerate and be more responsive to throttle opening with less octane. Race fuels have stuff you are putting in your tank. To cut to the bones, pump gas doesnt mean much today, since it can lower volatility and evaporation characteristics, as well as higher octane. mean many things in many areas of the USA, as well as during different And many are considerably denser than pump fuels. Mixing pump premium with race fuel tends to only slow down combustion, and cause the times of the year. What is available in one area, may differ greatly from jetting or mapping to become richer. This does not increase performance, what is available in other regions at the same time of the year. Also, different blends differ with the seasonal changes. So, just what is pump unless the engine requires these things. The problem with less refined grades of fuels is that they tend to congas in Alabama and the Southeast region? Well, that depends. In most tain more paraffins (waxes), and less detergents, and thus, more carbon of Alabama and Georgia, pump fuels of different grades are distributed can build up on valves and pistons, or waxes can build up in injector or by pipelines, and stored in large tanks at the tank farms at pipeline outlets. In the past few consumption when tested on the dyno, but the most important factor is years, we are seeing more clogged fuel filters, and failed fuel pumps how fresh the fuel is at the specific filling station where you purchase it. In actual testing on a dynamometer, I have seen 2-3% differences in out- than ever, due to rusty fuel tanks, as well as the rusty mud pumped into your tank at the filling station from their tanks. If the bike is mapped put between fresh, locally purchased, premium fuel brands. However, I regularly see 4-6% differences in output between fresh fuel and older fuel for 10% ethanol fuel, it can make the same output as ethanol-free fuel. In most cases, ethanol-free fuel can make a touch more output that has been sitting in filling station tanks for a few weeks. Then there with stock mapping, but not always.
