ELEC9123: Design Proficiency (S1 2012

Analogue and digital circuit design

You are required to design all of the following three design tasks from Weeks 1 to 3.

Design task 1: Digital dice

Design a digital dice using a seven segment display, a driver, a digital counter, an oscillator and other necessary components. When a button is pressed and released, the digital dice box should display a random number between 1 and 6.

Design task 2: Key chain

Design a key chain that is equipped with an electronic gadget that can be attached to a set of keys, (eg: car keys, house keys) to help you locate these keys if they are lost. The device is to emit a 1 kHz tone for 30s, whenever you loudly clap your hands together. Use a duty cycle of 0.5 for the 1kHz oscillator and provide 0.25 W into the speaker. The crystal microphone outputs a 300mV peak to peak signal when you clap your hands together within 5 meters of the key chain. Calculate all resistor and capacitor values and specify the type numbers for the ICs used in the design.

Design task 3: Digital to analogue (D/A) converter

D/A converters change binary inputs into an analogue voltage or current. Design an 8-bit binary D/A converter (unipolar) with a current to voltage converter operational amplifier. The 8-bit input must be provided by the digital I/O card of the computer (i.e. 0=0V, 1=5V). i) ii) iii) iv) Measure the full-scale analogue output voltage (under no load condition). Calculate the full-scale output voltage (under no load condition) Describe the difference between the measured and calculated output voltage. Calculate the full-scale analogue output voltage assuming that a load resistance of 2000 .
