LESSON TOPIC: Reading for Meaning VELS DOMAIN: English VELS DIMENSION: Reading and Writing

Standard Students read independently and respond to short informative texts with familiar ideas and information, predictable structures, and a small amount of unfamiliar vocabulary, they interpret the main ideas and purpose of texts. Students write a variety of simple and compound sentences and accurately use full stops, commas and question marks. Learning Outcomes: By the end of the lesson students will be able to: Read the text independently and as a whole group Identify the key points within the text Complete a summary of the text Lesson Plan Introduction: Gather students in a circle on the floor with the required text Vintage toys in the 1920s Inform students that you will be selecting students to read a paragraph at a time out loud to the class Encourage students to follow along with their handouts Development: Instruct students to for the inside outside circle format, students may require assistance in organising this Instruct students to discuss with their partners the key points in the text Then instruct the students to rotate one place around the circle and discuss with the new partner how they would summarise the reading Consolidation: Inform students that they are to write summaries of the text, and that they can pick out the key points of the reading to read out Ask students if they know what a summary is? With the assistance of the class write a whole group summary Then send students of to their tables to complete Roam the room to ensure students stay on task and to also assist any students that may need help

Conclusion: On completion have students read their summaries to other students to ensure they make sense and that any corrections that need to be made are fixed Students may then show the teacher their final pieces for correction Early finishers may continue work on their fraction pictures
