As role models teachers & parents need to guide students directly & indirectly.

Set them up with activities & situations where they can succeed. Direct guidance means setting expectations & boundaries for your students/child & keeping them informed. Indirect guidance is when you informally guide children to take learning steps or behave accordingly without actually voicing what is expected out loud. For example if you design your classroom so that there are no wide open spaces, you are teaching children indirectly that they need to use their walking feet.
