DROP 2 VOICINGS FOR GUITAR Stuart Johnson Guitar Lessons St.

Louis Mo
Drop 2 voicings for guitar or piano are simply 4 note closed voicing chords (all notes stacked on top of each other with no spaces) with the 2and note from the top droped to the bottom voice. For simplicity let's look at drop 2 voicing from left to right instead of up and down on a musical staff. Using the substitution chart below you can voice any melody note on a lead sheet with a 4 note drop 2 chord voicing. Learning drop 2 voicings on your guitar will greatly expand your harmonic vocabulary and give you a good foundation for learning to play in a chord melody style

HOW TO USE DROP 2: Take any jazz standard from a fake book or real book and start voicing the melody note from top to bottom with drop 2 chords. Drop 2 chords work well with scale like melodies without large interval skips. Drop 2 chords work well for comping on the top 4 strings of the guitar.
