Although Agatha Christie was the worlds most successful and best-known detective writer, she was rarely interviewed or seen in public places. Most people feel this was because of shyness, but it also comes from a bizarre incident which happened early in her writing career. he had !ust published one of her best thrillers " The Murder of Roger Acroyd- in #$%&, when she mysteriously disappeared. 'here was a tremendous amount of publicity and a nationwide search for her. At this time she was unhappily married to her first husband, who later left her for another woman. Agatha Christie was found in a hotel two weeks later registered under this other womans name( he e)plained her strange disappearance and actions by saying that she had a loss of memory or amnesia. Many newspapers said that she was only trying to get publicity for her new book. he was very hurt and upset by this idea. Although she continued to write many more successful books, she rarely appeared in public again and was almost never interviewed. *uring her long writing career she wrote over eighty-three books. ome of them were made into popular films, like Murder on the Orient Express. he also wrote a play which began its performance in +ondon theatre in #$,% and is playing today, the world-famous Mousetrap. -obody knows e)actly how much money she made but it is generally thought that she earned more than ten million dollars. .ne estimate of the total number of her books printed is three hundred million copies - more than any other author in history( Agatha Christie died in /anuary #$0& at the age of eighty-five. 1ut it is obvious from the number of her books still sold that her two famous detectives " 2ercule 3oirot and Miss /ane Marple " will continue to live for many years to come.
