USING MATH TO SOLVE REAL WORLD PROBLEMS

INSTRUCTOR'S LESSON PLAN OBIECTIVES:


Learnerswill:

L Work togetherto develop and solve mathematics problems related to road travel in Germany. The problems and solutions may involve concepts and operations such as simple addition, ratio and proportion, and use mathematicaltasks such as metic/English measurement conversions and calculating and comparing the gasoline consumption of different vehicles.
2. Use one ofthe problems and its solution to prepare a simple lesson plan for a fourth, fifth or six{h grade level class.
3. Explaintheir problems and lessons

4. Identify the different mathematical concepts and operations used in each of the problems and suggest other concepts that couldhave been used.

5. Analyze the lesson in which they have participated and determine which of the following pedagogical features they recognized: cooperative learning, constructivist teaching/learning methods, multicultural ideas and enviroments, integration of subjects, questioning, assessmen! use of a problem from the real world.

MATERIALS:
Portions of road maps, overhead transparencies, handouts (directions, lesson plan frarneworh calculators, metric conversion tables, car rental information sheet)

PROCEDI]RE:
1.

Anticipatory Set:
a. Post "props" to "set the stage" for the simulation. Place problem packets on

eachtable.

b. Direct students to their first task. Remind them to keep it simple and that it is to be a cooperative endeavor. Allow 15 minutes for completion of the task. Explain that interpreting the problem is as much a part ofthe task as solving it.
