A reinforced concrete wall had been constructed to protect the sand dunes. The defence works is of particular significance as the area is close to the Horsey gap, where, in 1953, the sea had inundated a large area of land.

Case study 1.2.5 The beach is subject to severe erosion in winter storms, which threaten the toe of the wall. A scheme was designed which involved placing 12 -16t rock armour directly onto a geotextile filter and wrapping this around the toe to stop movement. GEOfabrics HP17 was chosen as the filter due to its excellent performance. It possesses a high puncture resistance (17kN), high permeability, excellent filtering efficiency (to ensure small particles are retained whilst allowing a free flow of water), extendibility to adapt to the rock without rupturing or reducing performance and durability during both installation and service life. The geotextile was very easy to install. Approximately 31,600m2 were placed in less than four weeks of inter-tidal working.
