The Tagoloan river, as classified by National Water Resources Board, is the 13 th largest river system among the eighteen

major river basins in the Philippines in terms of watershed size covering eight towns in the provinces of Bukidnon and Misamis Oriental. The estimated drainage area of the watershed has 1,704 square kilometers with a depth of six meters and having a length of 106 kilometers from its source in Malaybalay City, Bukidnon province. The water supply of the community comes from this watershed; hence, this is considered an important resource by the people. Despite being considered as a major water resource around the areas of Bukidnon and Misamis Oriental, there are some inconveniences affecting the community as well as wildlife. Urbanization (or development) has a great effect on local water resources. These include operating cement quarries and a variety of industrial establishments along the streams. Quarrying of boulders in the river is a potential for erosion of soil and runoff of soil into nearby water supplies. It also produces noise and air pollution surrounding the site. This affects life in nearby creeks and rivers mainly on their natural habitat causing local consumers to gather lesser amount of fishes in streams. But on the contrary, the Tagoloan river is a good source of limestone used to make cements. Wastes coming from Industrial establishments cause the stream to be filthy and to have an unpleasant odor endangering the watersheds health. Additionally, streams tend to overflow during rainy days. The Tagoloan River Basin Management Council (TRBMC) provided dikes to solve the problem on overflow. Efforts should be made to protect the watershed and its surrounding ecosystems. We recommend that the government should impose existing laws and programs pertaining to the prevention of pollution on watersheds. We would also recommend that the government should provide reforestation projects. Beyond laws, there are some solutions that can be implemented by the society and by individuals. In order to do this, we recommend that a well-formed community of people and local residents should actively participate and work together in protecting and preserving the watershed. When people are aware of what the watershed does for their water supply then, they know that it will be in their interest to participate in watershed protection.
