Principles of selection and adaptation of songs and poems

Criterion

READABILITY
The

chosen poem or song must be readable by the students. There should not be too many words that are unfamiliar to them. However it is okay if there are some in order to develop their knowledge in vocabulary.

Suitability of Content

A teacher should ensure that the song and poem chosen must be connected to the syllabus. It is good to keep your teaching material with the sequence that had been set as in the syllabus.

E.g.: Old Mac Donald, Year 2 syllabus

Topic: On the Farm

Old MacDonald had a farm, E-I-E-I-O.

And on his farm he had some chicks, E-I-E-I-O.


With a chick, chick here, And a chick, chick there, Here a chick, there a chick, Everywhere a chick, chick, Old MacDonald had a farm, E-I-E-I-O.

Syllabus are planned to ascertain the pupils learning topics are well organized. Apart from that the content should also be appropriate to be taught to the learners. the language used must be appropriate with the pupils proficiency level.
