THE MAKING OF A SPIRITUAL PLACE ARCHITECTURE OF SILENCE AND LIGHT

Architecture is frozen music - Wolfgang van Goethe. The very point of an architects work is that people who inhabit the space should feel some pure emotion. That is the very aim of an architect: to gift a pure emotion. This is the reason why a church has that magic: because it talks beyond functions. Architecture really is the shape of the spirit - Mario Botta.

INTRODUCTION: Music is desirable and strong enough to provoke emotions in a spiritual place like a Church. On the other hand Architecture is that subliminal form of music which can gift that pure emotion that is essential in a Church. A Church is a place for worship, for contemplation, for retrospection. Its a meeting place where people come together for a purpose on occasional basis. Its a mysterious place whose architecture had been transforming over time and space. Its a place where the will of an epoch had been translated into his facades and roofs. Its a place in which the heights of artistic movements are reflected in its form.

AIM: A study seeking to understand the making of a spiritual place and to give a design solution for a church complex following scriptural principles. OBJECTIVES: to impart silence, light and order to the architecture to bring in the true essence of the church by studying its beginning and origin to study ideas such as monumentality and its relevance in the church to design a space acoustically good to give spatial solutions for varying accommodation

METHODOLOGY:

 To study ideas such as monumentality and its relevance in the church To study the various other aspects that go into the making of a spiritual places like temple, mosque, synagogues etc.. To study design solutions and ideologies of modern architects like Le Corbusier, Louis Kahn, Frank Lloyd Wright, Tadao Ando, Mario Botta, Aalvar Alto etc...

PROJECT DETAILS: A proposal of a Church Complex for a Protestant Community in Kompally, Hyderabad Area : about 7-8 acres

SCOPE AND LIMITATIONS: Emphasis on giving design solutions for space. Structural details, interiors and services are addressed in brief.
