Summary: DRAGANA MECANOV
ON THE ARCHITECTURAL ASSESSMENT OF RESIDENTIAL BUILDINGS FROM THE PERIOD OF
MODERNISM
The beginnings of modernist residential architecture can be traced back to the latter part of the 1920s. At first mostly
characterized by omission or rejection of faade ornamentation, modernism was not readily recognizable as a distinctive
trend because of the strong tradition of historical styles in faade composition and even more in the organization of interior
space, and it was only in the subsequent phases of its evolution that modernism became more prominent in residential architecture. Symmetry and traditional faade compositions were gradually abandoned, increasingly giving way to structures
composed of cubical, asymmetrically arranged volumes and shapes. It was only in the mature phase of modernism that the
design of living spaces became fully responsive to the functional requirements of its age and that modernist architecture
came to predominate in all of its elements.
The paper focuses on the problem of assessing the value of residential architecture within the historic core of Belgrade.
The analysis, based on a selection of particular residential buildings designed by eminent architects in the interwar period
and in the considerably changed political and social circumstances after the Second World War, seeks to identify their analogies and possible models as a helpful tool for assessing their architectural merits.
Modernist residential architecture is analyzed in terms of: the relationship to the surroundings, the organization of
space, construction, composition etc. The analysis of individual examples is followed by suggestions for a possible upgrading of modernist residential buildings in the historic core of Belgrade.
Upgrading the built environment and residential space is inevitable and necessary because residential space reflects
the lifestyle, daily needs and dwelling culture of a particular environment, the individuals social status and the relationship
between the individual and the community. In addition, the attitude of the designers of these buildings towards the heritage
is also identifiable, as well as the current attitude of institutions and society towards the legacy of modernism.
