"MPA Study: Social Media Enhances Magazine Consumption, Engagement for Millennials." - Emedia and Technology @ FolioMag.com. FolioMag, 27 Aug. 2012. Web. 28 Feb. 2014. <http://www.foliomag.com/2012/mpa-study-social-media-enhancesmagazine-consumption-engagement-millennials#.UxDhxRalqlI>. - Research found that adults from 18 to 34 believe that "technology has improved their experience with various media - such as magazine." The study shows that 40% of respondents have self-identified as avid magazine readers, with 95 percent of that group reading printed titles and 43 percent reading digital editions. 62% respondents believe that by accessing more media they feel that they are able to learn more about a certain topic or story. The majority of these respondents 69% uses a smartphone to access the media. About 56% of respondents say they follow a magazine online because the access was a lot faster and easier. It was easier to access multiple topics at the same time and it was faster to read one magazine to another. My thoughts of online magazine access are very different. Although I do agree that for most it's more convenient, for me it's never the same than to have the magazine right in my hands. I'm a little old school and I need to have a printed copy in front of me. The experience I feel will be very different from reading it online to flipping the pages one by one. When the idea of magazines no longer going to be published by paper but rather accessible through the Internet, I was in anger. There are just some things that are better left alone. For example, I believe it's a great idea to post your pictures online so family members and friends can see it. But I feel that it is never to same to own the original copy of the picture because it holds a symbolic meaning to the memories that we hold. 3 Things Christians Should Stop Doing On Social Media Wilson, Jarrid. "3 Things Christians Should Stop Doing On Social Media." Jarrid Wilson. N.p., 23 Feb. 2014. Web. 26 Feb. 2014. <http://jarridwilson.com/3-thingschristians-should-stop-doing-on-social-media/>. - In this blog by Jarrid Wilson, "3 Things Christians Should Stop Doing On Social Media," Wilson clearly voiced his 3 reasons why he believe Christians should rethink about their position before publicly attacking someone on social media. First, he feels that it's not necessary to publicly shame someone on public media, rather he suggests that it is better to do it privately by messaging them, texting them or giving them a call. Secondly, he advised that the Lord's words should be used accordingly to the fullest and should not be used randomly in pictures or to guilt trip anyone. Thirdly, he argued that getting involved in an argument of Facebook and Twitter makes you no less than the opposite party, no matter what you are trying to argue for. Overall, although Wilson is clearly objecting to what Christians should stop doing on social media; he is also providing ideas and solutions to how they can fix it or altered what it is that they do. I am very impressed with this blog mainly because I felt that it was very well thought out and put together. Not only did he argue why these kinds of people shouldn't do these things on publicly, he also gave them suggestions. I felt that he didn't really tried to attack

anyone, particularly Christians, I felt more like he was actually trying to advise and guide them towards a more positive image in the public media. From reading his blog and comments by followers, I came to understand that he is a very wise person to be able to argue indirectly against this particular subject. Yet at the same time he didn't sound bias towards anyone. Effects of Media Ratings on Children and Adolescents: A Litmus Test of the Forbidden Fruit Effect http://web.b.ebscohost.com.proxy.lib.csus.edu/ehost/pdfviewer/pdfviewer?vid=4&sid=9d ba3069-e7d6-4076-b9b9-85220906ed2a%40sessionmgr110&hid=119 Gosselt, Jordy F., Menno D. T. De Jong, and Joris J. Van Hoof. "Effects Of Media Ratings On Children And Adolescents: A Litmus Test Of The Forbidden Fruit Effect." Journal Of Communication62.6 (2012): 1084-1101. Academic Search Premier. Web. 26 Feb. 2014. - In this article, it evaluates the study of using pictograms, age classification, and parental advisory and warning labels to warn and inform "individuals," children, parents, caretakers of the content of products. The goal was to provide appropriate information about the media product so that they are able to make decision regarding their media consumption. In this case, the Forbidden Fruit Effect (a side affect that can make something become more appealing) was used in the experiment to determine the psychological and physical thinking and actions of children, ranging from 9-11 years of age and from 13-15 years of age. In addition, the effect to have less attraction and attention towards a particular called the Tainted Fruit Effect was also being tested in opposite of the Forbidden Fruit Effect. They also tested the theories of Reactance (to behave freely by wish) and Commodity (one that cannot be obtained, can be obtained freely and somewhere else.) They found that age classification and warning labels are more appealing towards children whereas, media ratings have a stronger effect on older children and adults. Also, the experiment showed that pictograms and warning labels made no significant difference to the participants. Overall, this study was conducted to learn how minors are being exposed to harmful media and at the same time warn them of their media consumption. All in all, I've heard of the Forbidden Fruit Effect before in my Anthropology class but I never knew that you can apply it to this kind of situation. I agreed to some degree that children and individuals who are aware of the warning labels relates directly to the 2 theories of Reactance and Commodity. There are those who knows what is good for them and will likely look away. But then again, there are also those who are extremely curious and also those whom desires do something because they've been restricted for so long. As for me, I feel that the Tainted Fruit Effect targets directly at me most of the time. For example, although I love watching action movies that involves a lot of fighting scenes and deaths, the other kind of action movies that I absolutely cannot stand are ones that are abusive and full of slaughtering and horror. Most of the time, these kinds of genres don't attract me and so I simply don't pay attention to them. Therefore, I feel that even though Forbidden Fruit Effect attracts individuals to become curious (which is a good thing), I am also happy that there are also others like me who simply ignore the things that we know that are bad for us.

Media Use by Children and Adolescents from New York City 6 Months After the WTC Duarte, Cristiane S., et al. "Media Use By Children And Adolescents From New York City 6 Months After The WTC Attack." Journal Of Traumatic Stress 24.5 (2011): 553556. Academic Search Premier. Web. 26 Feb. 2014. - A survey was done to conduct the stress disorders of children from 4th - 12th graders 6 months after the attack of WTC in New York City, known as 9/11 in 2001. The survey hypothesized that children with direct exposure to the attack would face trauma, and probable stress disorder (PTSD). They addressed the students to answer the different kinds of sources in which they learned about the attack of WTC through TV, the web or other combination of media such as: radio, magazines, newspaper, etc. They were asked to answer about the amount of time they spent studying the case, from a) a lot b) none or c) some. They were also instructed to identity the level of exposure they had with the WTC attack, if it was direct exposure, family exposure or no direct exposure. They found that intense use of the web did not show an effect of PTSD and that associations between PTSD and intense media used varied by direct exposure to familiar exposure. I am in any case most likely a student with no direct exposure in relation to PTSD in media usage. If I don't experience it first hand I am most likely going to read about it online and on social website such as Facebook. Definitely I will be traumatized and at some level become depressed! Doubtfully, I might repost the video, article or picture however, it is only because I want my family and friends to become aware of the situation. It is also a way for me to express my feelings and thoughts. I would agree that social media has helped me with my stress and during my difficult times. It's definitely a great way to gain support and love from everyone who had gone through the same things, experience the same time or feel the same way. Parting is Such Tweet Sorrow Bachai, Sabrina, and Elijah Wolfson. "Parting Is Such Tweet Sorrow." Newsweek Global 162.3 (2014): 100-104. Academic Search Premier. Web. 27 Feb. 2014. - Once again people attack individuals on the use of social media and technology when it comes to personal problem. In "Parting is Such Tweet Sorrow" by Bachai, she portray that using social media is a "kind of self-medication" for people who are going through stress disorder, heath, illness or death. They found that it is a new way of reaching out for support for the kinds of problems they are facing. Ephrom describe Twitter as a new eulogy ( a speech or writing in praise of a person or thing) and Facebook as a memorial site. According to Elisabeth Kubler-Ross, there are 5 steps of grieving, as she mentioned from her book "On Death and Dying." The first step is denial, then isolation, anger, bargaining and lastly, acceptance. Everyone must go through the 4 steps to be able to live with loss however it is hard to deal with the 5th step, as it becomes hard to isolate yourself with media. Due to contemporary culture, generationally divided, the only way for teens to know how to reach out is primarily through media out-reach. And Facebook allow that kind of network of people to exist to be supportive of each other. Over-healing can lead to healing. Although the media world amplifies support and disappointment, memorialized profiles provides opportunity to give friends and family to look back at old

posts and pictures of the deceased person. Social media stands as a transient yet a permanent network that makes it easier for everyone to access, gain support and healing. I definitely believe that social media can serve as a useful and positive social gathering for everyone to connect together spiritually. From personal experience I do agree that social media out reach has helped me through some of the hardest times of my life. I do also give encouragements to others as well to help them feel better and at ease that they are not alone. Social Media 2014 Revolution "Social Media 2014 Revolution." YouTube. It ranges from different age groups to the different purpose of media use. The video described social media as "the biggest shit since the industrial revolution." It reveals that adults spend over 15 hours per day on the Internet. Social media were also mentioned to have much different kind of purposes; from dating to looking for jobs, businesses, coalitions, and even for simple entertainment. It was said that there are more Facebook accounts in the world than the whole world combine. From my understanding, there continue to be more active users everyday on the net and are actively using social media as positive resource. In my experience, using social media to look for a job is simply not bad. It all depends on the kind of network you have and share with another person. It is to my surprise by the level of trust we have on the social web with strangers. Youtube, Holland's Got Talent "Holland's Got Talent Judge Drops Racist Remarks Ft. David So." YouTube. YouTube, 24 Nov. 2013. Web. 27 Feb. 2014. <https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VS33q_KH1LQ>. - With this particular video by JKFilms ft. David So, the main topic was "Holland's Got Talent Judge Drops Racist Remarks." The crew elaborated on the racist comments judge Cornelis Willem Heuckeroth, who was verbally attacking Xiao Wang during his live audition on Holland's Got Talent. Heuckeroth verbally mocked and attacked Wang with remarks such as: "supply" instead of surprise, "which number are you going to sing, #39 with rice?" "Vote for the Republic of China" and even calling him out that he looks like a scientist. Although the other two judges, Chantel Janzen and Dan Karaty suggest that he stops, he deliberately ignore them and continue on laughing at what he thinks is "funny." JK described Wang's reaction as very polite and humble. In comparison, JK commented that it is a common trend to see mainly white folks to attack verbal racist jokes at others more than any other group of people. In my opinion, it struck me that racism in media occurs more often even in small cases like this one, which was supposed to be taken "lightly." It shows that will see these kinds of direct verbal abuse online, where it can be stream freely and publicly to everyone. I really like watching JKFilms. They keep me updated about news from all over the world, they are informational and at the same time entertaining because they come more from my related perspective of the world today. They come with multiple views on the the topic of racism. Public online videos like this one, receive tremendous support and positive feedback because we can't to see someone get publicly attack. That's just how our society function. As long as we don't see it happening, we won't do anything about it. However, if it's happening right in front of us, we somehow find the courage and strength to stand up for that person. For my project I wish I can do something related to JKFilms, where I can opening share my opinions of the world and still make an educational impression to others. A New Culture of Learning Thomas, Douglas, and John Seely. Brown. A New Culture of Learning: Cultivating the Imagination for a World of Constant Change. Lexington, KY: CreateSpace?, 2011. Print. - Thomas and Brown view modern learning as a collective in which students take in personal and professional hands-on learning experiences. This type of learning environment involves the use of high technology usage. For example, The Internet has changed the way we think of both technology and information. Technology is no longer just a fast way of transporting information from one place to another, and the information it moves is no longer static. Instead, information technology has become a participatory medium, giving rise to an environment that is constantly being changed and reshaped by the participation itself. I agree that, as information is constantly being produced, consumed, updated and altered, new practices of reading, writing, thinking and learning have evolved with it. (p. 42) It is a matter of how we receive information and how we will send out that information. Cons in Social Media : Trung Nguyen
