CAMERA MOVEMENTS, ANGLES AND SHOTS

We wanted to challenge the traditional representations of women throughout our film opening, one of the ways we did this was through the use of the camera. There is a close-up of the male character, it is dark and in black and white, this makes the male character look vunerable; this is a more traditional representation of a man. There is a mid-shot of the main female character, the camera is at a low angle, this makes it look like the character has more power, this is more of a modern representation of women; this is the effect that we wanted also it exaggerates the difference between the male and female characters and the difference in power.

MISE EN SCENE
Through out the film, we played with the lighting, when the main character is at the poker table, we have a spotlight over her, this spotlight kind of gives the effect of her being vunerable; we looked for different ways for this to come across throughout the opening so it doesnt challenge the conventions completely. This gives the effect of a more traditionally represented woman. Again, throughout the opening we wanted to keep some of the conventions of gangster films and how they portray with woman; even if it is subtle. We did this through the outfit that she is wearing, although it is casual, we have added the red scarf, the colour red usually represents femme fatals in gangster films, women are always portrayed as being vunerable and having to be rescued by the men; traditional representation of women .
