WRITING
PERSONAL ESSAY
Recount an incident or time when you experienced failure. How did it affect you, and what lessons did you learn? I had been waiting anxiously all day, wondering, hoping, and thinking about nothing besides the basketball tryout I had participated in the day before. I knew I had done my best, but I had no idea if I would be up to par with the other boys there. I needed to clear my head, so I decided to go for a jog around my neighborhood. When I finally came home, my dad was sitting on our porch bench, waiting for me. I could see from the slight smile on his face, the one he wears whenever hes disappointed but trying not to become emotional, that the news I wanted to hear had arrived. Utah Pump N Run is the best AAU basketball program in the state of Utah, and one of the best in the nation. The day before I received the heartbreaking news I had gone to try out for their 16u team, the team for players who would be going into their junior year of high school. I started preparing for it right after my high school season ended, so I was extremely confident in my abilities. However, as soon as I walked into the cold, musty gym at Waterford High School I began to have doubts. There were players from all over the state, players I had read about in the newspaper when they made the first team all state. There was no way I could compete with them! While it looked glum for me, I thought on what my coach had told me before one of our games a few months earlier. There is only one thing you can control on the court, and thats you! You cant decide how hard the competition will be, or if every shot will miss, only how hard you work. As I thought about this I realized it didnt matter how good anyone else was, it only mattered how hard I pushed myself. The tryout began, went through, and ended like any other: we played one on one, scrimmaged and did some drill work. I was feeling good about myself when I left. The day after the tryout, the day I got the results, was one of the hardest days of my life. At first I tried to justify why they would cut me. I thought it might be because I was LDS, and wouldnt play on Sundays or maybe because I was feeling sick, and couldnt perform my best. Eventually, I came to realize that the other guys there were just better than me. I had a tough decision to make after this. I had to decide whether I should continue playing basketball, or if I should quit and pursue other interests I had. During my dismay, inspiration came to me from a rather odd source: batman. In the movie Batman Begins, Bruce Waynes father says Why do we fall, Bruce? So we can learn to pick ourselves up. After hearing this I decided the decision I had was to give up and quit what I love, or to rise above this challenge and become better and stronger. As soon as I had this understanding, I started a plan on what I would do to improve myself. I created a workout plan which I would follow to the letter, I started a meal plan, to help me get in better shape, and I became fully committed to myself, my passions, and my future.
