Track 4 * 1st Grade

Week 7, 3rd Quarter

Reading: We are going to work on identifying the number of syllables in a word and understanding that each syllable has a vowel. You can practice counting syllables at home and trying to break words apart into syllables. Lion = 2 syllables li/on Banana = 3 syllables ba/na/na Read = 1 syllable read We will also be working on comparing texts on the same topic and finding similarities & differences between the texts. Students need to be able to tell at least 3-4 ways that the books are similar and 3-4 ways that they are different. Science: Mrs. Os class We are talking about how soil can be different depending on where we live and we are going to see how our soils compare from just our area. We have talked a lot about what makes up soil (including rocks, sand, silt, humus, and clay). Miss Stoners class We are looking at sand and discovering what silt is. We will take a look at clay and find out different ways we use sand & clay in the real world. Mathematics: We are continuing to work on becoming more fluent with our math facts and counting up and backwards by 10s starting from any number. True or false will also be worked on during group lessons and we will have students try to change false equations into true equations. These can be tricky, so we encourage students to show their work: 5 + 6 = 12 2 v v 11 10 ` I know this is not true because 5 + 6 is 11 and 12 2 is 10. If it was 5+5 = 12-2 it would be true.
