about the next 6 weeks

*traditional zPS is back in session starting Tuesday, Sept. 2
*bussing (for in-district families) and lunch (for all) begins to be offered once again starting Tuesday, Sept. 2
*NO parking in the front turn-around. Please pick the east or west lot to park when dropping off and picking
up your kiddos!
*You MUST sign in using the computer system in the office when coming to volunteer and/or visit
*kinder kiddos will need to continue to work on eating quickly, as our lunch time is reduced now that everyone

for lunch and what is a snack.

ZQuest Staff Goes to College...Hope College...to
TEACH!

We are super excited to have started our
partnership with Hope Colleges Methods
and Curriculum Course this past Friday!
This is the BIGGEST adventure weve been
on so far, where we have the opportunity
to tell our ZQuest story to young adults
who are getting ready to enter the student
teaching world in the next two semesters!
So...off we went to Sue Brondyks class,
and I must say that not only were we
impressed with the excitement that they all
had, but they are even more excited to get
into our classrooms, work with our kids,
partner with the ZQ teachers to learn more

about Project Based Learning and what its like being a teacher right now! Friday, September
5 will be the first visit they make to us. During this visit the kids will be getting to know our
kids and just observing what personalities, learning styles, and teaching styles we have! On
September 8 and September 17, we will step out of the classroom and head to Hope College
again to continue teaching about PBL and helping the upcoming teachers actually plan a PBL
that they will teach to our kids. In between our visits with them, they will be coming and
working with kids at ZQuest, and then launch their PBL lessons on October 13, when we return
from our first break! If you see our Hope friends at school, feel free to introduce yourself,
chat with them, get to know them...who knows, there might be a future ZQuest teacher in the
mix!

Classrooms Updates
K-1
We have been working hard on building our reading stamina during the month of August.
Students have been introduced to workstations such as Read to Self and Reading to Someone
and in September we will be introducing Listening to Reading and Word Work First Grade
students will also be bring home a set of spelling words starting Sept. 2 =) Mrs. Foerch is
teaching Kindergarten Math! Well be starting our Math Expressions Curriculum in September.
Some will start with number and counting routines of numbers 1-10, others will start on finding 5
groups in sets of numbers. Mr. Adams is teaching First Grade Math and will start with finding
number partners and counting to 120 everyday. All K-1 kiddos will start a PBL/ Science unit about
using our senses. We are hoping to included a real-world shopping experience to the Holland
farmers Market (more info coming soon!). Our goal this past month has been to become
independent learners and will we continue to build those skills!

The Parts of an Independent Learner

2-3
Our 2-3 friends have jumped right into our first Social Studies PBL, about the history of Zeeland.
The kids are super excited about their field trip to the New Groningen Schoolhouse where they will
have the opportunity to participate in actual lessons from about 130 years ago. Mrs. Funks kids
have been engaged in lots of Science labs learning about how measuring matters. The kids are
having a blast! We have started our Math rotations and kids are getting comfortable moving
from one class to another and working hard in their Math stations. We will be starting our
Guided Reading rotations the first week in September. Our Spelling pretesting is done and we are
looking forward to getting into nice routine come September. We have completed all of our
district assessments and are using that information to start meeting with our kids at their
individual level. We hope that all of our new friends and old friends have felt welcomed and
excited about the wonderful journey that we are embarking on!
4-5
The 4-5 students enjoyed learning about the Scientific Method by conducting a
Gummy Bear Experiment during the month of August. We will use the
information learned and apply it to our science units throughout the year. In
language arts the kids have been working hard on building their reading
stamina. We have currently read continuously for 16 minutes and 32 seconds.
This means that all students are doing real reading with no interruptions. Also
in language arts, all students have created a personal narrative piece that they
will be finalizing the first week in September. In fourth grade math the
students have been working on Place Value and Rounding. In fifth grade math
students have been looking at comparing fractions. It has been a fantastic start
of the school year! We are excited to see continued growth in all students.
