Thesis Work: FEA modeling of Powertrain Mounts rubber components

Job category Other Form of employment Location Gothenburg Country Sweden

Background Hyper elastic materials, such as rubber, pose a challenge when it comes to FEA-analysis in terms of accurate results. Powertrain mounts system develops products that to a large extent incorporate rubber materials. The characteristics of hyper elastic materials aids in damping out vibrations and noise that originates from the engine. The different components varies in terms of use and complexity from complete mounts that transfers loads in X- Y- and Z-Direction to more simple so called torque rods that works in tension and compression only. Scope Evaluate the possibilities of using FEA for modeling complete powertrain suspension mount. Focus will be on finding a method to model the movement, force-displacement and stress-strain in the component and achieve correlation between measured force-displacement values and FEA-analysis. The material model will be of high importance since it will to a large extent affect the results. Steps; 1. Gain general knowledge in Powertrain Mounts. 2. Literature study with focus on rubber material and the use of hyper elastic materials/elements in Abaqus. What type of information is needed and what can be extracted from the model? 3. Knowledge in Abaqus and ANSA. 4. Set up a model of a Tie bar. Use of hyper elastic elements. Specify boundary conditions and connections between the parts. Calculate: a. Static stiffness (Force-Displacement) b. Dynamic stiffness (Stiffness-Frequency) c. Durability (Stress-Strain) 5. Correlate to measured values a. Static stiffness (Force-Displacement) b. Dynamic stiffness (Stiffness-Frequency) 6. Document results Profile Mechanical Engineering, M.Sc, or similar. Knowledge in Finite Element Modeling and Analysis. Knowledge in ANSA and Abaqus Knowledge in Matlab Have a structured approach and ability to work independently.
