Activity Plan

Activity: Apple Counting Sign in Who is it for: Kindergarten age 5 Why: To help the children count how many counters are on the log and then they write the number down, and I put out apples to count because I want to see if this sparks an interest or discussions. Curriculum Area: Math Standards: Learning Goal: Exploration and discovery. Objective: Problem solving and numeracy. Strategy: Children learn to count and recognize numeric symbols. How to prepare: Before the children arrive at school, set out the log and go over to where we keep the counters and choose the apple counters and put the same amount of apples on each log because there are 3 tables. How to teach: Introduction: Tell the children that after they sign their name that in the next column on the piece of paper I want you to count to see how many counters in this case apples are on the log and to write down that number in the column. Teaching steps: Step1: Encourage the children to count the number of apples. Step2: Write the number down on the paper and if the children doesnt know how, guide the children to the paper chart that has the numbers on it to help out the children. Step3: Remind the children to take their time and it is not a race. Closure: When the children are done they can put their sign in sheet where they normally go in the white basket. How to assess and document: Objective Math Evidence in learning The children link the number of counters they counted to a number symbol. Over time you can see their progress Document evidence Date the sign in sheets every day and then you can look back on them and have the sheets as documentation
