Parallel Structure

AGENDA
Standard: (3.16, 3.2, &3.4) Give students the confidence to use a new grammatical form in writing and speech. Lesson Objective: Introduce the students to the rules and forms of parallel structure. Help the students develop an ability to recognize, correct, and use these rules and forms. Activator: Students take a couple of minutes to decide if there are any mistakes in two sentences. The mistakes are within the structure of the sentence (the sentences are unparalleled). Allow the students to brainstorm together what is wrong with the sentences and how they may fix them. Mini Lesson: Pass out the parallel structure sheet to the students. Read each rule out loud and do the small examples together. Explain the difference between the matching rules and moving rule. Learning Activities: Have the students flip the worksheet and work on fixing the sentences on the back. The students can work with a partner to fix these sentences. The goal is to make all the sentences parallel. Checking for Understanding: Ask (cold call) a few students to put the rules into their own words for the class.

Checking for Understanding: Round robin share of the answers on the back of the sheet after completion.

Wrap Up: We will review the sentences from the worksheet and go over the answers together. The answers will be provided by either cold calling or round robin sharing. The students will explain how and why they corrected a sentence a certain way to further understanding. Homework: Consider the list of debatable topics and choose a few that you would consider writing a speech about. Brainstorm a few thoughts about some topics.

Formative Assessment: Students should write a sentence in the incorrect form, then pass their paper to a neighbor; the students must correct the example they were given. These sheets will be passed in as the students exit the room. Summative Assessment: The students will be assessed on their understanding of parallel structure when delivering their speeches (that must contain one explain of parallel structure). Differentiation Strategies Used/Accommodations Made: Certain students only need to do every other fix on the back of the worksheet (4 instead of 8). Materials and resources needed: -85 copies of parallel structure sheet (double sided) -Smart camera
