Essential Question: How should we allow for voice/ participation and decisions?
Activator: Board Brainstorm of the different types of governments/ ruling?
(5 minutes)

Mini-Lesson: What type of governing do we see on the island? (15 minutes)


-Find quotes to support you opinion about Ralphs democratic society. Consider the
question: Does he allow others to speak? And does he listen to these ideas? (Think)
-Discuss with someone next to you about the quote you found that supports this type of
government (Pair)
-Discuss, as a class, about whether Ralphs democracy and the investment of people
when they feel their voice is heard (Jack and the signal fire). (Share)
Activity: (25 minutes) -The Principal comes in and says you, as a class, can plan the last
day of school. How will you decide what to do?
*Do not discuss what you would want to do, discuss what would go in to making the
decision. Do this activity in a group of 3 or 4. Have someone write down your plan on a
piece of paper.
Example: electing a leader to make all the decisions.
-Discuss as a class: share out your groups plan
Exit Ticket: -On a note card, write down a time you have been involved in a
democratic decision process.
Example: Family meeting or electing a team captain
Answer these questions:
1. What is a time you were involved in a democratic process?
2. Were you supportive of the outcome?
3. Do you feel your voice was heard?
4.What could have been done differently?
