Reflection What worked and how do you know?

On the pre-assesment, a majority of students simply stated I dont know and left their card empty. I used this information to alter one of my lessonsHowever, by the end of the unit, students demonstrated their knowledge by writing what they can do and how they can do it. During discussion, most students participated in identifying, defining, and offering ways to complete this task. Specifically, the class anchor chart seemed to be the most beneficial in providing key terms to this concept. Students were able to offer their own suggestions to help define this term. I believe modeling and providing repeated practice to students was benefiial in solodifying their understanding of the term and what it actually means to visualize. This was demonstrated as they listened to text and drew their visualiztions. They became more detailed in their work and their explanation as to why they drew certain things. What didnt work and how do you know? On the first day, when I introduced the term, asking students to visualize in their head what they see and illustrate the worksheet, students didnt seem to fully understand what I was asking them to do. Students didnt know whether to draw in the first square or the second square and had many questions in relation to this task, requiring a lot of teacher guidance. After completeing this lesson, when I began discussing how it went with my mentor teacher I immediately identified this uncertainty from students and knew I needed to model more in the upcoming lessons. My mentor teacher explained to me that modeling is extremely important to these young learners, even what may seem basic to us. How will you apply what you learned to the next unit? Through pre- and post-tests students can gain informative knowledge in relation to students prior knowledge and what students learn. I have learned the importance of these two measures to help teachers adapt and asses their instruction. Through the pre-assessment students demonstrated that they didnt understand what specifically they could do to help them better understand a story with no illustrations. On the pre-assesment, a majority of students simply stated I dont know and left their card empty. I used this information to alter one of my lessons. I made one of my lessons soley focusing on idefntifying and defining the term, as well as, practicing and modeling how to visualize.
