TWS 8 Reflection, Self-Evaluation, and Professional Development Reflection on Showcase Lesson Whole Class When I taught my Showcase Lesson,

, my objective was students will collect and record data through observations and surveys with at least and 80% accuracy. Based on the results of my pre-assessment, I found that only 5 of the students in my class knew what tally and/or frequency charts were. When my students were not successful with the pre-assessment, I began the lesson because my pre-assessment was only a show of hands and since only five students knew it was important that I explain. I learned throughout teaching my lesson some students were not understanding how to convert the data from their tally chart to a frequency chart so I had to stop the activity and explain more about how to do this. After the lesson, I evaluated my students assessment results. I found that all of the students in the class knew and understood ways to collect and record data. The next time I have the opportunity to teach this lesson, I will make it more clear what they are to do with the blocks in the bags. I also will make sure each students have the same number of blocks and the same color blocks in their bags because that will help them assess the information better and will offer an opportunity for them to compare their results with their neighbors. Reflection on Showcase Lesson Three Students When I taught my showcase lesson, my most successful student was one of my high achieving male students. This student is pulled out for the PLUS program every Monday. There are two reasons why I believe this student was the most successful. First, I believe he was most successful because he always seems to enjoy learning and pays attention. Second, I believe that he was successful because he asks questions to ensure that he is doing it right. In my opinion the student who ask questions and seems engaged will most likely succeed in the lesson. This information tells me that in future lessons, I should spend more time focusing on the questions he asked because chances are other people in the class are having the same questions. When I taught my showcase lesson, my least successful student was a student who is pulled out for resource a coupe days a week. There are two reasons why I believe this student was the least successful. First, I believe he was least successful is because he has a very hard time paying attention. Second, I believe this student was not paid attention to as much as he should have been. This information tells me that in future lessons, I should stay close to the students who have trouble paying attention and I also should check in more frequently with children like him because they need extra attention to understand and stay on track. When I taught my showcase lesson, my average student was a girl in the class who is great in some subjects but in others she does not do as good. She seems to enjoy every subject but if the subject or activity involves operations she does not excel. There are two reasons why I believe this student performed at an average level. First, I believed she performed at an average level because the activity was hands on. Second, I believe this student performed at an average level because during the activity there were no operations they had to perform. This information tells

me that in future lessons, I should add operations in order to challenge her skills and also in the future if I teach this lesson I will keep it as a hands on activity because it seemed to benefit every student in the class. Additional Lesson Reflections and Analyses In addition to my Showcase Lesson, I reflected on the other lessons that I taught. In Lesson 1, my objective was, students will be able to correctly identify the components of part to whole fractions by using M&Ms, students will be able to identify the components of part to whole fractions with 90% accuracy. The strengths of this lesson were students really seemed to understand the concept of part verses whole fractions. To impact student learning in a positive way, one thing I would change about my lesson is I would write what they were telling me on the board so that after the lesson we could recall the facts they were telling me. In Lesson 2, my objective was, students will learn to label many different fractions on a number line that they create with sentence strips. The strengths of this lesson were the sentence strips were a great visual representation of a number line that allowed the students to create their own number line which also allowed them to practice as they went along. To impact student learning in a positive way, one thing I would change about my lesson is I would have thought about the possibility that equivalent fractions were not that simple to digest for the students. I would have thought of some way to show the students visually the way Mrs. Carter did. In Lesson 3, my objective was, students will observe the affect gravity of a marble on car tracks and be able to explain the affect of gravity with at least 80% accuracy.. The strengths of this lesson were the students already had an idea of what gravity was and reading the science book section about gravity and motion gave the students background information about gravity and motion. To impact student learning in a positive way, one thing I would change about my lesson is by making sure every student was following along with my reading in their Science books, which would let them see what was going on. In Lesson 5, my objective was, students will analyze the poem to determine language as literal or nonliteral through a variety of ways. Students will perform this with at lease 80% accuracy. The strengths of this lesson were the five different reads that students participated in. To impact student learning in a positive way, one thing I would change about my lesson is allow the students to do the Read to Notice individually and then do it together as a class. Professional Development Based on my experiences this semester, I selected two professional development goals. My goals are having better time management skills and being more creative. I selected these goals because through my 329 experience I noticed that my lessons were either too rushed or too drawn out. Most of the lessons that I taught were already in the students books but I was allowed to put my own personal touch on each lesson, through this I learned that I need to be more creative with

lessons no matter what the subject is. To accomplish these goals, I plan to take the following steps. I plan to talk to professionals and also my future cooperating teachers. I also plan to research ways to be come better with time management when it comes to teaching, because this is one the major problems I had this semester but plan to try my best to change it.
