Did you know that.. Germs are routinely picked up on hands when touching the environment for example door handles, telephones, taps and surrounds, when using the toilet, handling pets, uncooked foods etc. Germs are easily transferred from the hand to surfaces and food. Some germs that are routinely picked up on hands can cause infections. The good news is that these germs are easily removed by HAND WASHING WITH WARM WATER AND SOAP OR RUBBING CLEAN HANDS WITH AN ALCOHOL HAND RUB. Please follow the hand hygiene technique illustrated to help prevent the spread of infection. If you would like more information or have any questions on hand hygiene, ask a member of staff can contact the infection control nurse.

Hand Hygiene Technique 1. Soap up rubbing palm to palm 4. Fingertips and backs of fingers into palm

2. Palm to palm & wrists, fingers interlocked

5. Thumbs clasped in palm

3. Palm to back of hand & round wrists
