Thomas Sumter

Thomas Sumter was called The Gamecock. He was a fierce fighter. The British burned his home in Clarendon County. Sumter then stirred up the Midlands and the Up Country against the British. Sumter and his men won some battles. They lost many, too. One time, Sumter surprised the British. He captured men and supplies. Then he became careless. He and his men stopped by a creek. He knew the British would be following them, but he felt he had found a good hiding place. He had not. While his men were swimming, the British attacked. They killed or captured most of the men. Sumter escaped, but he lost his men and supplies.
