The Yemassee

The Lowcountry of South Carolina is where you would have found the Yemassee tribe. They lived in the Coastal Zone along the coast of the Atlantic Ocean near Georgia. Just like the Cherokee and Catawba, rivers provided food for the Yemassee, as well as water for drinking and cooking. The Yemassee traveled by dugout canoes to different villages to trade. In the summer, the Yemassee lived close to the coast, in wigwams. In the winter, the Yemassee moved farther inland, and lived in wattle and daub houses along rivers. Again, like the Cherokee and Catawba, the Yemassee hunted, fished, and farmed. However, the Yemassee were also able to gather clams and oysters (shellfish) from the ocean.
