MEDIA ALERT FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE DE URIARTE SPEAKS ABOUT GENTRIFICATION WHAT: Dr.

Mercedes De Uriarte will be speaking about gentrification, specifically in Austin, Texas and the affects it has on the community. Gentrification is a shift in an urban community toward wealthier residents or businesses and increasing property values, which at times comes at the expense of the poorer residents of a community. WHO: The Loyola University Maryland Department of Communication will be hosting this event with De Uriarte as the keynote speaker. De Uriarte obtained a Ph.D. degree from Yale University, was the first Latina editor to the The Los Angeles Times, and has received several awards. Those include a Fulbright Scholarship to Peru and the Robert F. Kennedy Memorial Award for Outstanding Journalism. WHY: De Uriarte will be sharing her experiences and research pertaining to gentrification in Austin, Texas and the affects it had on the community. The displacement of the poorer population has led them to a state of vulnerability that in turn has increased the amount of human trafficking in Texas.
