Festival of Words
This week was QISS Festival of Words, so there were many activities that we were participated in. The week opened with a game of Family Feud, everyday there was a question of the day, and of course, there was the Spelling Bee! Here are some of the other things we did this week: We played lots of word games creating words using different beginning sounds for different word families, putting together beginning and ending sounds to create words and practicing reading and spelling sight words. We played a money game in math, rolling a coin dice to see what coins we would get and who would get closest to a dollar. We talked about the two other Bossy R combinations that we hadnt yet covered: ir and ur. We made Bossy R books and the kids illustrated several Bossy R words for each vowel combination: ar, er, ir, or, and ur. We also made word pictures out of some Bossy R words. The kids finished conducting their own surveys and graphing their data. The finished graphs really showed their understanding. We had the 10th and 11th graders come and read to us on Wednesday afternoon and the kids loved it! The big kids were really great to our little guys and everyone had a lot of fun. We had our own class spelling bee and I could tell that the kids had been practicing at home. They knew how to spell so many words! Our first place winner was Eric Wang, our second place winner was Ivan Belousov, and our third place winner was Maclean Thorpe! Great job guys! We had a visitor to our classroom this week: a little baby turtle! The kids were fascinated by watching him play. Next week is spring break. Have a fun, safe, and restful holiday and we will see you back at school on April 7!

Important!
This is a reminder that the snacks that the kids bring to school should be healthy snacks like cheese, yogurt, dried fruit or nuts, or fresh fruits and vegetables. Healthy bodies equal healthy minds!

Help at home! Ask your child to show you the action and tell you the sound of the letters and letter combinations weve learned this week: ir and ur Review the letter combinations weve talked about so far: ai, oa, ie, ee, or, ng, oo, ou, oi, ar, and er. For at least 20 minutes every day, read together! Ask questions about the story and record it on your reading log. Practice reading and spelling sight words. Talk about the plants and animals that you see in your community.

Word games were a part of this weeks activities.

Our Kindergarten/Pre-K Spelling Bee with our winner Eric Wang!

The kids practiced their Bossy R words as we made our Bossy R flipbook. The kids formulated their own survey questions, conducted a survey and graphed the responses.

The kids loved reading with the 10th and 11th graders!
