ARTICLE SUMMARY

In the article titled Mobile Devices in the Classroom by Rob Schachter, it is stated that technology such as smartphones, tablets, net books, and laptops could and should be used in the classroom as a type of education tool. Schachter explains how some schools frown upon the usage of mobile devices in the classroom and goes on to tell how some schools have gone as far as to hold students cell phones for ransom in which parents had to pay a fee of fifteen dollars to reclaim their son or daughters mobile device. Schachter then explains how mobile devices could be used in classrooms for more than just texting a friend or checking Facebook, Twitter, or Instagram. Schachter says that these devices can be used research within the classroom as well as part of a lesson. According to Schachter, teachers and students can share documents and homework questions with each other, and students can share ideas and topics with each other. In a section of the article titled Customized Learning Platforms, Schachter tells how an earth science teacher can create activities on mobile devices where students can interact with a virtual water cycle and create concept maps. It can be said that more school districts should capitalize on this movement to use more and more technology in the classroom. Why fight something that can only benefit students in the long run? Rather than having the teacher tell the answer to a question asked in class, why not have the students look up the answers on their phones or tablets? Students retain more information when they research the information themselves instead of the teacher just giving them the answer. Move forward with the usages of todays technology.
