Focus Lesson: Begin the guided reading lesson by starting out on focusing on the cover of the book. Tell students to take their attention to the cover and ask if someone can tell you what the word vain means. What does vain mean? Have a few students answer or guess, and clarify that it can mean that you think everything is about you and that you are better than everybody else. Ask students whether they would prefer reading all aloud, or to popcorn. Start reading book: After Page 2: Ask students what they think bigheaded means? After Page 3: Ask students why Donkey and Crow would want them to see the King? After Page 5: What do you think is going through Peacocks mind? After story is over: Ask students, what do you think the moral of the story is? Try thinking about how Peacock acted, or how he should have acted After a few students answer (should be able to answer correctly), then direct them to their moral log sheets and direct with them what to put in as the moral by working together.
