Plot Line:

The main character, Leo Borlock, was introduced. He moved from his home in Pennsylvania to Mica, Arizona. The story took place in the early 2000s.

Stargirl won the contest, but only Dori Dilson and two teachers were waiting for her at the school.

D
Stargirl changed back to her usual self and gave up on becoming popular Leo did not invite Stargirl to the dance, but she went anyways Stargirl led the dance and everyone mimicked her Hillari was unhappy with Stargirl and slapped her Stargirl moved to Minnesota The school kept some of Stargirls nice behaviors

Leo wondered where Stargirl was. He heard stories about kind events happening throughout the country and thought of Stargirl. The book ended with him receiving a porcupine necktie from Stargirl.

Leo Borlock- Flat and Dynamic Leo, the narrator, was the main character. He liked fitting in and being a part of the crowd. He acted like his friends, and enjoyed belonging to a group. He was flat, throughout the novel he did not like being different from everyone else. We knew how Leo felt and thought during the novel, so he was a dynamic character. He loved Stargirl and regretted his decision of wanting her to change. Stargirl was always on his mind and he ended up being a set designer. Stargirl Caraway- Round and Dynamic Stargirl had blonde hair, freckles, and a closet full of interesting clothing. She had a pet rat, Cinnamon, and two parents that loved her. She enjoyed making people happy and did not care what people thought of her. She cheered for both football teams, and was asked to join the school cheerleading squad. Hillari Kimble, hated her, but Stargirl did not hate Hillari. Stargirl was a dynamic character because I knew her personality and her behaviors. Stargirl was round because, she changed her behavior after Leo asked her to be normal. Stargirl loved Leo so much that she changed for him. Near the end of the novel, she turned back into her usual self when she found out she would never be popular. Hillari Kimble- Flat and Static Hillari was the popular and mean girl. She hated Stargirl form the moment she saw her. She made up lies about Stargirl, threatened to drop Cinnamon, and slapped Stargirl at the dance. She was cruel throughout the book and little detail was known about her so she was flat and static.

Themes: One important theme is never change who you are. Stargirl changed her behavior for Leo, but nothing good came out of it. People actually disliked Stargirl more after she became Susan. Stargirl should have been true to herself. Another theme is fear of the unknown. When Stargirl first came to the school, the students would not talk to her because they were scared of what would happen. They were reluctant to talk and get to know Stargirl. If people would have been bolder, they would have realized that Stargirl was an awesome girl. A third theme is do not expect others to change. Leo wanted Stargirl to change who she was so she could become popular. Asking her to change was unfair of Leo; he had no right to ask such a thing. Stargirl changing eventually led to her breakup with Leo. Mood: The mood is a combination of happy, sad, and curious. I felt happy when Leo and Stargirl started their relationship and when Stargirl helped other people. I felt sad when Stargirl was kicked off the cheerleading squad and when only Dori Dilson congratulated Stargirl for winning the state oratorical contest. At the end I felt curious because I wanted to know if Leo and Stargirl would meet each other again. Tone: The tone is a mixture of joyful, disappointing, and sad. The tone was joyful when Stargirl danced in the rain and sang the other students Happy Birthday. The tone was disappointing when Leo wanted Stargirl to change who she was. The tone was sad when Stargirl was left behind at the opposing school because she cheered for both teams.

Symbols: The desert symbolizes freedom or escape. Stargirl and Leo are free to do whatever they want in the desert without judgment; they can escape from their peers and just be themselves. The ukulele symbolizes joy, whenever Stargirl as happy she would play her ukulele. Similarly, if she was sad, she would not have her ukulele. Motifs: One motif is people can be mean. Stargirl was shunned by her classmates and was considered an outsider. Her fellow students would not sit with her at lunch and clapped when a tomato hit her in the face. Another motif is not everyone appreciates kindness. Throughout the novel, some people did not want Stargirl to be nice to them. Hillari Kimble did not want Stargirl to sing her Happy Birthday and Stargirl was kicked out of the funeral. A final motif is be kind. Stargirl made it her mission to help others. She baked people cookies for holidays, she dropped change for strangers, she was a companion to lonely old people, and she cheered for everyone.
