Thecandidatemustdemonstratetheabilityto: selectasuitabletopic adoptapersonalstancetowardsthetopic devise,structureandsustainanargument selectevidencefromprimaryandsecondarysourcestosupportanargument employtheliterary,linguisticormediaconceptsandterminologyappropriatetothe expositionofthetopic.

The firststageintheprocessistheselectionbythecandidateoftextsortopicsforstudy andtheformulationofabriefdescriptivestatementofwhatthecandidateproposesto study.Thisproposalmustbesubmittedtotheteacher/lecturerforapprovalin orderto ensurethattheproposedmaterialsareappropriatetoanEnglishcourseandworthyof studyatthislevel,andthatthestudyitselfismanageable. Thestudyshouldexplorealimitedareaandexamineitindetailwithappropriate supportingevidence. Someimplicationsoftheserequirements (a) Theteacher/lecturershouldassistcandidatestoidentifyauthorsandtexts,language ormediatopicsthatare: appropriatetoanEnglishcourse worthyofstudyatthislevel. (b) Thepurposeofprovidingacarefullywordedtopicistwofold: tofocus,atanearlystageintheprocess,thecandidatesattentionontheaims ofthestudybeingundertaken toprovideexaminerswiththemeansofassessingtheextenttowhichthe candidatehasachievedtheaimsassetout. (c) Thewordingofthedissertationtopicshould: identifyauthorsandtexts,languageormediatopicstobestudied indicatethescopeofthestudytobeundertaken provideaconciseexpositionoftheliterary,languageormediaaimsofthe studytobeundertaken.
