Lesson Plan Unit 5, Day 2 HEADING Karen Guarino Geometry 65 Minutes Introduction to Ratios, Proportions, and Similarity OVERVIEW/

RATIONALE The purpose of this lesson, the 2nd one in this unit, is to (re)introduce similarity to students. These concepts and theorems are important components of geometry, and by exploring these ideas, my hope is that students will come to a deeper understanding of their value and where they come from. ENDURING UNDERSTANDINGS/ ESSENTIAL QUESTIONS

What makes two things similar? Why are similar figures important and valuable to explore? Triangles are everywhere in our world and our valuable to understand for many applicable reasons.
GOALS/OBJECTIVES Students will be able to set up and solve proportions. Students will be able to solve for missing sides of similar triangles using proportions. Students will be able to name similar triangles. Students will be able to name and use similar triangle shortcuts STANDARDS

46 Determine whether triangles are similar using triangle similarity shortcut 47 Solve for missing sides of similar triangles using proportions
Practices: Make sense of problems and persevere in solving them. Construct viable arguments and critique the reasoning of others. Attend to precision. Reason abstractly and quantitatively. MATERIALS PowerPoint presentation, Days1&2 Class Notes, homework problems PROCEDURES BODY OF THE LESSON Students will first complete a warm-up on proportions: 10 minutes Review warm-up: 5 minutes Students will then take notes in the guided notes page that I give them as we discuss the concepts as a class. Students will be constantly questioned in order to gather understanding, and will be asked to recall what they already know: 30 minutes Students will practice solving triangle similar problems in small groups: 15 minutes

CLOSURE Students will be given their homework assignment Final thoughts: When do we see similar triangles? How can we use this information in our daily lives? What are ratios and proportions important? : 5 minutes ACCOMODATIONS Students who need extra assistance will be helped by SATs. Students may use calculators if needed (since doing the calculations by hand doesnt add to the purpose of the lesson). Students who prefer to work alone may do so. Other accommodations will be provided as needed. ASSESSMENT/EVALUATION (MAY HAPPEN IN BODY/ PROCEDURES) Students will be assessed formally on their ability to complete the warm-up and similarity problems. They will be assessed informally through conversations, questioning, participation in whole-class discussion, and attention to all steps being taken, and general monitoring throughout the process.
