MODELING OSMOSIS (LAB) PROBLEM: Which way will water flow when a raw egg is placed in 250ml of vinegar?

HYPOTHESIS: If a raw egg is placed in vinegar (water) and left for four days, then the water will flow into the egg from an area of high concentration through the membrane into an area of low concentration causing the egg to expand. THEORY: Osmosis is the diffusion of water from an area of high concentration to an area of low concentration across a selectively permeable membrane. I think the water is going to flow into the egg, because there is high concentration of water outside of the egg (95% of the vinegar), and there is low concentration of water on the inside (74%), so the water molecules will flow through the membrane into the egg, causing the egg to expand. PROCEDURE: 1. Measure circumference of a raw egg using string and a ruler in cm. 2. Place egg in beaker and fill with 150 mL of vinegar. 3. Record observations. 4. Measure circumference for 4 days and record observations. DATA/OBSERVATIONS: DAYS 1 3 CIRCUMFERENCE (cm) 14.8 16.8 LIQUID LEVEL (ml) 300 262 OBSERVATIONS 50 mL displaced Very heavy Slimy small bits of shell still on egg 38 mL displaced 190 without egg slimy no shell left

CONCLUSION In this lab, we studied the effects of Osmosis, by putting an egg in vinegar (weak acid) for four days. After this time, the water molecules from the vinegar went from a higher concentration, through the selectively permeable membrane, to a lower concentration. After four days, our groups egg expanded 2.5 cm, 0.5 smaller than the class average (3.0), and 0.2 smaller than the grade average, which was 2.7. My hypothesis stated that the water molecules from the vinegar would flow into the egg. My hypothesis was correct ANALYSIS When the egg was placed in the vinegar, the eggshell dissolved because of a chemical reaction. The chemical reaction occurred because the eggshell is calcium carbonate, and the vinegar is weak acid. Once calcium carbonate (the eggshell) is placed in vinegar, the eggshell will dissolve, creating a chemical reaction. Period 7 group 3s egg expanded 4.5 cm after four days, compared to group 7, which expanded 1.1 cm. Group 3s egg expanded 3.4 cm. more than group 7. The rate in which group 3s egg expanded was about 1.125 cm. per day. I think these groups may have had different results because there could have been a mis-calculation from group seven. I can prove his because group 7s expanding rate was different from all the other groups. Water is important in cells because, it regulates the temperature, and cools down the cell, and water is important for all cells to survive.
