Powers of ten
Review: powers of 10
Evaluate the following powers
100 = 102 = 10-2 = 105 =
1 100 (decimal moves 2 places to the right)
0.01
100000
10-4 =
0.0001
How to convert:
40 000 000
The 4 is in the 107 position. = 4 x 107 The first important digit, the 8, is in the 105 position. = 8.32 x 105
832 000
The 9 is in the 10-6 position. = 9 x 10-6 The first important digit, the 4, is in the 10-3 position. = 4.12 x 10-3
Calculations
Multiplying or dividing:
1) Separate (rearrange) the numbers from the powers. 2) Multiply or divide the numbers in front
3) 4) Use exponent rules to multiply the powers of 10 Make sure your answer is in scientific notation
in sci. notation)
101) x 10-2
= 1.5 x 10-1
Example 2: (0.2 x 103) x (4 x 105) = (0.2 x 4) x (103 x 105) = 0.8 x 108 (still not scientific notation) = (8 x 10-1) x 108 = 8 x 107
Remember: there are no rules for adding and subtracting exponents! You have to add or subtract the looooong way. (convert scientific notation to regular numbers, add or subtract as needed, and convert back to scientific notation
