Solid Works 1
Solid Works 1
The Example.
The example consists of a %ACA &'() aerofoil. %ACA was the predecessor to %ASA and the four digits of the aerofoil name are a code for a series of e*uations that completely define the shape. The coordinates for this should be a!ailable from the same place that you found this tutorial+ they consist of x+y and , coordinates in a simple text file. -igure ( shows the coordinates.

n this note you will be shown how to read these coordinates into SolidWorks and how to create a straight and a twisted 3D shape from them.
.pen SolidWorks. Create a new part. /ead the file with the coordinates. nsert 0 Cur!e 0 Cur!e Through 123 4oints. Select the cur!e+ usually it is called Cur!e (. %ow create a sketch and click on the plane that the aerofoil coordinates are in to select its orientation. 5 nsert "6 Sketch and select the front plane 7 see -igure )8
"("
Select Cur!e (. Tools 0 Sketch Tools 0 Con!ert 9ntities. This will con!ert the Cur!e to a Sketch which you can then manipulate in SolidWorks 9xit the sketch. 2ou can now extrude the sketch as normal. 2ou should end up with something like -igure 3
-ollow the instructions gi!en abo!e until you come to extrude the aerofoil %ow we will define a line along which the aerofoil will be twisted. nsert 0 Cur!e 0 Cur!e Through 123 4oints. 4re!iously we ha!e read in file here we will define the points manually. Define points at '+'+' and '+'+(''' respecti!ely. This is shown in -igure :.

Figure 4:
Select the Sketch of the aerofoil nsert 0 ;oss<;ase 0 Sweep Sketch ( should be the profile. Cur!e ) should be the path. 2ou must open up the =.ptions> tab and from the drop down menu labelled =.rientation<twist Type> select %Twist Along Path with Nor&al Constant$' Select )' degrees of twist. This is shown in -igure &
To change the point of rotation change the x+y coordinates on the manually entered cur!e. 2ou should end with result like those shown in -igure ?
