Date: 2/24/14 Title: Defining Moment Jigsaw Description: Students will read one of three different texts and discuss the similarities and differences between them in a jigsaw activity. Subject: Multicultural Literature Instruction time: 40 minutes Students level by grade: 11/12th grade Standard(s) to be addressed: Initiate and participate effectively in a range of collaborative discussions(one-on-one, in groups, and teacherled) with diverse partners on grades 11-12 topics, texts, and issues, building on others ideas and expressing their own clearly and persuasively (SL.11-12.1.) Make strategic use of digital media (e.g., textual, graphical, audio, visual, and interactive elements) in presentations to enhance understanding of findings, reasoning, and evidence and to add interest. (SL.11-12.5.) By the end of grade 12, read and comprehend literature, including stories, dramas, and poems, at the high end of the grades 11CCR text complexity band independently and proficiently. (RL.11-12.10.) IA.2. Read on-level text, both silently and orally, at an appropriate rate with accuracy and fluency to support comprehension. Learning Objectives: Students will be able to comprehend on-level text, summarize text, create a visual representation of the defining moment, and present ideas to peers. Differentiation: Student choice of three different texts, visual, written, and spoken communication of ideas Resources: Textbook for three pieces of literature, markers and paper for visual representations Instructional method(s): Independent reading, small group discussion, jigsaw Lesson Sequence: Break up students into three groups Read each piece within small groups Discuss the defining moment with small groups Individually draw a visual representation of the plot/defining moment Meet up in groups (one student from each original group) and share visuals and discuss similarities Whole class reflection
