What does formal mean?

Clue: Its not just a dinner-dance you will have in year 12.

1. In your groups order the letters from least formal to most formal. 2. Give reasons for every suggestion you have in ordering them. E.g. I think this ones the least formal because it has a colloquial greeting.

1. On your own write down FIVE words that are only found in the formal register texts. 2. Describe one other way (apart form using specific words) that you can tell a text is formal. Look at the difference between the formal and non-formal texts. 3. Pass your book to the left and add: a) FIVE more words to your friends list b) a response to their # 2. Do you agree? Can you explain it slightly better?

Lets discuss what makes a text formal! -Signs off formally e.g. Sincerely - Use formal superlatives e.g. Most, worst - Using a persons title e.g. Mr. - Not using abbreviations. For example, they have - Paragraphs that begin with topic sentences - use jargon or specific terminology
