TPC Coordinator Observation Form Name of Intern: Ellen Nelson Date of Observation: 3-10-14 Subject Matter: Language Arts

Domains Observed: Classroom Environment Instruction Planning and Preparation Professionalism Observations and Comments: (Anticipatory set; teaching/instructional process; guided practice; closure; independent practice) Students were giving speeches in Ellens classroom today. Students were dressed up for the speeches (suits etc.). Ellen wrote the order of the speakers on the board using a random drawing to determine the order. This is the second round of speeches the students are assigned due to the fact that the students did not do a quality speech the first time around. Students had a few minutes to get organized as they waited for other students to enter. Ellen told the class that they needed to listen to each others speeches and not spend their time writing notes, as it was too late for them to be doing that now. Ellen explained and demonstrated how they could possibly lose points when using the podium. Speeches were timed and Ellen had rubrics that she used to score the speeches. Students clapped at the end of the speeches. After the first speech, Ellen told the students to put all their items under their desks so she could be assured that they were listening to the speeches and not working on other things or their own speeches. After 5 speeches, Ellen told the class that their speeches so far were much improved from their first speeches. (I thought the topics of the speeches were interesting! I especially liked the one regarding Teacher Training and Evaluation!) I also thought the students did a very nice job over-all. Ellen gave the students a break mid-way through the speeches. Some students stayed in the classroom, and a few went to get a drink. When Kasum had a speech brain freeze, I may have stopped him and offered him a choice to possibly redo it tomorrow, or even later in the class period. Perhaps they each would get one red card that they can use once to stop and reschedule or restart. Just an idea.however saying this, I am not sure how many chances they may already have had. The students asked if Ellen had sent out an email about the speeches. She replied that she had. Evidently some of the students had not received it. Ellen told the students that the rest of the speeches would be on Wednesday and then she provided the information regarding Tuesdays plans. Ellen told the students that they had done a much better job this time and that practicing makes a difference. She then allowed the students 4 minutes of free time at the end of the class period. No behavior issues were noted. Ellen was very professional. Signature of TPC Coordinator: Shelley Balkan Signature of Intern Coach: Signature of Intern Teacher: Date: 3-10-14
