Who are you designing for?

Users are male and female children from the age 6 to 12 and they have difculties being motivated to read especially with paper books, whether in structured reading comprehension tasks at school or in less structured leisure reading. Children at that age are hyperactive and enjoy physical activities, which might have an impact on their motivation to read. In general, children have different attention span and they have the ability to concentrate for several hours if they are motivated. Also, they develop a feeling of independence and they enjoy being challenged (they enjoy nding, questioning and solving problems.) One last fact about children is that they have positive attitude toward technology which is worth investigating and exploiting.

PACT Questions

What are the people doing? and why?

They practice reading either at school or home for pleasure which usually intertwined with learning and getting essential reading skills. The method on which they are acquiring reading skills is based on the theory of Edutainment, developed by Landoni, stating that reading comprehension books for children with the purpose of acquiring reading skills must entwine entertainment and education. At that age, they undertake reading almost on a daily base and their reading is not timed, for example, If they do not nish the story within their reading time, they can continue it on the next day. According to Perfetti and Marron readers improve with practice Children do read alone or among peers, their reading might be accompanied with a facilitator who guide them for example pronounce and explain the difcult words for them and answer their questions.

PACT Questions

Where are the activities occurring?

Usually children read at their home, school, friends house, childrens book store, public libraries which has a department for childrens book and childrens book clubs reading.

PACT Questions

What are people using or will use?

Children practice reading through printed books (hardware) and ebooks (software). In case of ebooks children interact with books through input tools such as laptops, mouse, keyboards, digital tablets, screen touch and colour graphic displays. Ebooks do require internet connection for installing and updating only. According to Landoni, the market does not have something especially designed for childrens e-reading. He mentioned that tasks at childrens ebooks are not very well dened and that there is an inefciency in the ow or the structure of the information.
