Bell 1 Elizabeth Bell ENGL 1102 Elizabeth Hinnant 19 January 2014 EIP Proposal [First Draft] RJ Reynolds High

School is an Arts Magnet School. This means that art is incorporated into very class in some way, be it music, creative writing, theater, or visual arts. However, the visual arts teachers are the ones who have always stood out to me. Their individual teaching styles are reflected in their students artwork. I choose to shed some light on how this is so. For example, two of the teachers choose to keep the lights off and use the natural light from the windows for the students. Why? Is it to save electricity, or for another reason? I have also noticed, that during my first two years of high school, the courtyards were always left alone. However, that changed my junior year, and they were decorated for the seasons. Why this sudden change? I also noticed that they hang some artwork in the hallways. Why? Is it for decoration, is it to reward the hard work of the students? Or is it to show off the best work of the class to try and make it more appealing? What is their favorite type of art to teach? Why is it their favorite? Does their teaching style change? Do they go more in depth? How is this reflected in the students work? Do they believe anyone can be an artist? Do they give more attention to those whom they think have more potential as an artist? Why did they want to teach at this school? Is it for the arts magnet program? Or is it because they think they can make the biggest difference at this school? Why do they have deadlines? Is it for grading purposes? Why not let the students work at their own pace so they can produce the best work they can? Why is the atmosphere of the art rooms so relaxed? Why do they let the students talk amongst themselves?

Bell 2 Why do they play music? Is it to further inspire the students? Why do the art teachers walk around the room to talk with and assist the students rather than the students going to their desks? Do they want the students to feel more comfortable so they can create their best work? Would it also be why they talk to the students so casually? From what Ive seen, the art teachers talk to the students more like theyre friends, instead of separating themselves with more professional language. I think this can be answered with some observation, and could shine some light on the art teachers at Reynolds.
