Green Computing or Green IT, refers to environmentally sustainable computing or IT. It is "the study and practice of designing, manufacturing, using, and disposing of computers, servers, and associated subsystems such as monitors, printers, storage devices, and networking and communications systems efficiently and effectively with minimal or no impact on the environment.

Green use reducing the energy consumption of computers and other information systems as well as using them in an environmentally sound manner. Green disposal refurbishing and reusing old computers and properly recycling unwanted computers and other electronic equipment. Green design designing energy-efficient and environmentally sound components, computers, servers, cooling equipment, and data centers. Green manufacturing manufacturing electronic components, computers, and other associated subsystems with minimal impact on the environment.

Environmentally-conscious future planning largely involve gathering information about emissions, direct and otherwise, which then give greater insight into how they can be reduced. PC manufacturing process accounts for 70 % of the natural resources used in the life cycle of a PC. The biggest contribution to green computing usually is to prolong the equipment's lifetime. Manufacturing a new PC makes a far bigger ecological footprint than manufacturing a new RAM module to upgrade an existing one, a common upgrade that saves the user having to purchase a new computer.

B.Tech 'IT' 2009-13

If companies can recycle the plastics and other components,

this can greatly reduce waste and toxins.

However, the hazardous materials in e-waste can harm the recycle workers if they are not properly protected. Developed countries now have facilities for recycling e-waste. However, in Europe, the plastics are discarded instead of recycled because the flame retardant chemicals are too toxic to work with.

To resolve these problems, the computer manufacturers must

start using recyclable chemicals

Green Manufacturing is a method for manufacturing that minimizes waste and pollution achieved through product and process design.

To support future generations by attaining sustainability by the means of preserving natural resources.

Reduce your consumption of natural resources. using solar energy and power to fuel your business.

Try

Unplug machines that are not in use. Leaving the machines plugged in actually does suck power despite what you may think. This is why its also a good idea to turn off your computers at night and to unplug the surge protectors so extra energy is not being wasted. Reduce your emission of toxic chemicals and materials. Reduce the amount of waste your company produces. Change your lights to energy-saving lights.

B.Tech 'IT' 2009-13

11

Introduce a recycling program within the company and encourage employees to dump recyclable materials into the correct bins.
Start purchasing green products and encourage your employees to do the same. Purchase a water fountain and avoid using bottled water. Encourage employees to use their own bottles to hold the water. Set up a system where lights are motion sensitive and will shut off after 10 minutes of inactivity. This way you will be able to save power by shutting off lights in rooms that are not in use. Purchase green materials like recycled paper and plastics.

10 items in your home that are plugged in and not in use, you could be wasting as much as 450,000 watts (or 4,500 kilowatts) of electricity per year!

Common devices that are left plugged in :

14

Over 600,000 PCs discarded worldwide @ homes & businesseseach day. Less than 10% of electronics are recycled. Takes about a gallon of oil to make a new laser toner cartridge. Est. 50 million tons of e-waste is generated globally each year. What you can do at techs end-of-life??? Re-purpose Donate Recycle through your manufacturer Third party recycler

Printing costs and wastage can easily be reduced by considering the following:
Economic/Draft Mode Recycling Cartridges E-Data Transfer

Points to be Considered Pages per sheet Black and White

Font Size

Margins

As a general rule ink-jet printers use much less energy than laser ones however the inks in inkjet printers spoil clean paper recycling processes. Use 80-90% less energy than laser printers Example: HP 4V laser printer Printer power consumption HP 4V 28-110 watts standby, 380 watts printing HP 4315 Officejet All-in-One 18 watts maximum

vs.

Switch to draft mode to increase printing speed.

Use LCDs instead of CRTs as they are more power efficient

Turn off the monitor when not in use (as opposed to running a screen saver).

Saving Energy

In power saver mode, the top item is not necessary, but screen savers use as much electricity as any normal processing, and the screen saver is not necessary on a flat panel display.

Turn off the computer when not in use, even if just for an hour.

Dont print unless necessary and you are ready

There are a number of colleges that have individual green computing courses and institutions that offer certifications.
GREEN COMPUTING CERTIFICATIONS

CompTIA Strata Green IT is designed for IT managers to show that they have good knowledge of green IT practices and methods and why it is important to incorporate them.
Information Systems Examination Board (ISEB) Foundation Certificate in Green IT is appropriate for showing an overall understanding and awareness of green computing.

GREEN COMPUTING DEGREES

Degree programs that provide training in a range of information technology concentrations along with sustainable strategies. Metropolitan Community College (Omaha) has an associates degree available in managing green data centers. Leeds Metropolitan University in the United Kingdom offers a year long graduate course in Green Computing.
