(CCSS 8.EE.A.2) Warm Up Review from yesterdays lesson on square roots: ask students to write two problems in which you need to use square root to find the answer. When they are finished, switch with their shoulder partner and solve each others problems (Formal Assessment). Go around the room and check for understanding have a few students share with the class. Lesson: Ask students to write down what think rational and irrational mean. Give a thumbs-up when finished. Once the majority of the class is finished ask for a few responses. Relating irrational to crazy and unpredictable should help the students remember that irrational numbers are unpredictable in nature. Handout the Rational Number Concept Map (Adjunct Display). Have students follow along and fill in as you explain each bubble and give examples. Ask for answers to the blank at the bottom of the handout.
