nd and estimate square roots and classify numbers as rational or irrational. (CCSS 8.EE.A.2) Warm Up Review from yesterdays lesson on square roots: ask students to write two problems in which you need to use square root to find the answer. When they are finished, switch with their shoulder partner and solve each others problems (Formal Assessment). Go around the room and check for understanding have a few students share with the class. Lesson: Ask students to write down what think rational and irrational mean. Give a thumbs-up when finished. Once the majority of the class is finished ask for a few responses. Relating irrational to crazy and unpredictable should help the students remember that irrational numbers are unpredictable in nature. Handout the Rational Number Concept Map (Adjunct Display). Have students follow along and fill in as you explain each bubble and give examples. Ask for answers to the blank at the bottom of the handout. Go over multiple examples as a class of rational and irrational numbers. Exit slip: Have you used a square root when creating your blueprint? Now that you know what it is, can you think of a way in which using a square root might have made things easier for you?
