UNIT: We Built a Zoo Lesson Plan Week 3 Tuesday Surface Area of Prisms and Cylinders Learning Target: To find

nd the surface area of prisms and cylinders using nets and applying it to the construction of enclosures in a zoo. (7.G.B.6) Warm up Have students cut out the nets for a rectangular prism, triangular prism, and cylinder and then construct them Ask students what shapes make up each of these figures (they should respond with squares, rectangles, triangles, circles). Explain to students that surface area just means finding the area of every single surface that makes up a shape. Ask things like, Do you know how to find the area of a square? What about a triangle? A circle? They will answer yes to all of these questions, so then ask something like, So if I know how to find the area of each individual side, what would I do to find the total surface area of the entire shape? Talk with your shoulder partner about this for 60 seconds. After this time has expired, gather the group back together and randomly select groups to answer (since you asked each group to talk about it, everyone should have some answer to contribute). Once the class has reached a conclusion, have everyone write in their notebooks using Split-Page Notetaking to write Surface area of a Cylinder on one side, and then the formula and a picture on the other side. Practice a few examples as a class, and then give a few examples for the students to work on their own. After students are done working through examples on their own, have them get in their zoo groups and work on finding the surface area of all of their enclosures. *NOTE if some of their enclosures dont have tops, make sure they realize not to calculate this in. Have them neatly transfer this data to the Measurement Data Sheet. Exit slip: How do you think we would find how much space fits inside the entire threedimensional figure? Is this possible? Do you know what this is called? Write some of your ideas down here (Collect Formative Assessment)
