Lesson Plan English III 2/6/2014 Online Sources: Tips for Internet Research Objective Students will learn

n how to identify good online sources from bad, how to use Wikipedia and search engines, and how to find citation information on certain internet sources. CCSS CCSS.ELA-Literacy.W.11-12.8 Gather relevant information from multiple authoritative print and digital sources, using advanced searches effectively; assess the strengths and limitations of each source in terms of the task, purpose, and audience; integrate information into the text selectively to maintain the flow of ideas, avoiding plagiarism and overreliance on any one source and following a standard format for citation. Background Students have recently learned about plagiarism and its consequences and signed a pledge not to plagiarize. This lesson is used to address common internet research questions and problems I observed while students compile research for their research papers. Materials Projector, Computer Smartboard, printed PPT slides Prep Have PPT ready to go on the projector Procedure 1. Introduce PPT by explaining why were going over this (common questions/problems Ive noticed in your research) (~2 min) 2. Go over PPT [see attached slides] (~30 min) a. Where to start: how to use Wikipedia correctly i. Navigation and citations b. Citing online articles c. Bad sites i. 4th grade ii. Be careful of blogs d. Citing History.com e. Scholarly search engines and good search terms (not just Google!) 3. Hand out slides after lecture so students have the info (~2 min) 4. In the time left, students can work on their bibcards/notecards/research/etc. (~15 min) a. Students can ask individual questions about their sources and citations at this time; I will circulate Assessment Bib cards, rough drafts, final drafts
