Abstract

The following work focuses on the common theoretical aspects of audiovisual translation followed by practical conventions of this particular field of translation in Slovakia and Germany. The main concern is not to describe the daily work of audiovisual translators but rather to summarize conditions which have an impact on everyday translation process. The work comprises three parts beginning with the theoretical one as an introduction to the topic. General and broadly accepted theoretical framework of audiovisual translation is the core subject of the first part. In addition, comparison of traditionally implemented understanding of translation is compared to its new field audiovisual translation. The first part of the work tries to answer the !uestion, if it is reasonable, on the one hand, to unanimously deny the concept of audiovisual translation being a part of traditionally accepted understanding of translation practice or, on the other hand, to unanimously accept it regardless all the constraints connected with it. The theoretical part of the work is followed by the analysis of current situation in audiovisual translation, firstly within "uropean conte#t, secondly concentrating on German traditions and lastly picking up the most tangible facts about audiovisual translation in Slovakia. Key words: audiovisual translation, dubbing, subtitling, Germany, Slovakia, conventions and practices in audiovisual translation
