I chose this unit plan for my portfolio because it shows mastery of knowledge concerning particular animals and the

wide use of sheep and wool. The topic of this unit plan is about sheep, and based upon the book Farmer Brown Shears His Sheep. I have developed six lesson plans within this unit, plus one culminating activity of a field trip to Parkers Sheep Farm. The childrens art will be placed on the bulletin board in the hall as we finish the unit. Each lesson plan is really quite different. I begin by reading the book to the children. I enjoy using character voice when reading, and would do so when instigating this unit in my classroom. I varied the lesson plans to include a variety of learning aspects, such as rhyming, singing, a writing prompt, memory, video, fact or fiction chart, shearing our own pretend sheep, sheep crafts, and a diorama. Children will use many of their senses while studying the sheep, especially when visiting the sheep farm. They will see, hear, touch, and smell the sheep. I have included in my unit plan a field trip approval procedure, which I have learned during a field experience. This unit plan exemplifies many creative learning experiences. Through the various lessons, children will be able to retain their knowledge about sheep. Furthermore, the culminating field trip will allow the children to apply the knowledge they have learned at the farm. I have learned that it is important to research the subject matter well before teaching the students. I will use these types of lesson plans in my future classroom.
